Desert Dawg build...what a switch!

So my friend dropped by this past weekend to show off his new car; a 2015 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. An amazing machine at $540K with options and 700 HP.

But I wasn't that impressed and pulled out the Trail to show off a real machine; that is when the crowd formed..lol.

Holy sweetness. Damn Baller for sure. Lol. Did u get to drive it?

lol...it is insane. I didn't get to drive this time as he just got it delivered and was anxious to drive back to Taos. But when he dropped by the last time, he had a carbon fiber black Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera that I got to drive and took it to 180 mph (like it was nothing).

I saw a silver 14 here in Newport Beach with similar mods and thought it might be yours. Glad I clicked.

For whatever it's worth here's my Toyota struggling in Vegas as I'm a fan of the 4Runner esp ones done up like yours.

Many thanks!

Saw your land cruiser at sema. How do you like the icons? I'm about to do the stage 5

Thanks jicko; I really like the location not only for looks but also is perfect height functionally.

I am considering getting their new D2 High/Low, so I can use the full power off-road while I can use the "20% low" as a DRL or driving light.

That will be a nice feature to have. I had a similar setup with some Warn dual beam lights on my old Z71 Tahoe except they were still meant for off-road use. The newer Rigids with the 20% low power intensity will be much better suited for street use.

Thanks...I am having them mount the lights underneath the top horizontal portion of the grille, so they going to custom make a mounting flange that will secure them1.

Do you have more illustrations/pics? I am going to mount mine exactly where you mounted yours. I'd like to grab some installation tips from you.

No, I just have the same couple of pics I posted earlier. Just make sure you use a thick enough and wide enough plate to provide enough bearing area for the mounting bolt and to prevent flex. Mine doesn't flex at all and no movement when driving.

I love your build! Been following it for awhile! I want to build a 4runner like yours with a few minor changes once I sell my Jeep GC, but I was wondering if you ever got the slimline installed?? I would assume not since we didn't see any pics?

I don't know what is more amazing... your rig or your photos!?! Great job on every aspect! Who is taking the photos when you're behind the wheel?

My Trail aspires to be more like your Trail. Waiting for some good weather to install my Toytec lift kit and I'll be a small step closer!

So I also ordered my wheels and tires late Friday.

I really stressed on this because I really want an aggressive look but have not been totally happy with past tires I have tried.

I love the look of the BFG KM2s and have used them in the past, but living in the high desert and mountains, I have learned they are not confidence inspiring in very wet/icy road conditions and they do get louder as they wear. But dang good looking tire and not bad handling either in totally dry conditions.

I also like the BFG ATs and have also run these on numerous past vehicles, but the outdated design does not fare as well performance wise when compared to the newer hybrids like the Duratracs, MT ATZs, and so forth.

I had tried the Nitto Trail Grapplers a couple of times, but they are heavy and noisy although I think they look really good. Not bad street performance either although I did feel a bit nervous in packed snow/icy conditions.

Most of the other mudders are probably too aggressive and not suited for daily driving and/or slippery mountain driving.

Also had the Nitto Terras but they didn't look very aggressive once mounted and wore fast (albeit on a heavy Dodge 2500 diesel).

My recent set were the Duratracs and overall a very good looking AT with great street and trail performance; I had them with 20-inch wheels (per my F150 shown above) so very little sidewall and thus great turn-in feel with very little sidewall flex. However, I know the Duratracs also have a thinner sidewall and have read on a number of forums where folks have observed the sidewall flex issue especially with smaller wheels during hard cornering, etc. So now that I am stepping down to a 17-inch wheel but keeping a 33-inch tall tire, I am a bit concerned about that some as I do like my occassional "spirited" driving...lol. Also, because of the thin sidewall, folks have also reported punctures/lost beads when trailing. But the Duratracs remained as my default go to tire if I couldn't decide.

So I have been doing a comparison analysis on tire specs (can't help myself as I am an engineer...lol) and think I found what will suite my needs! I wanted something that is more aggressive looking than the Nitto Terras or BFG ATs with good sidewall design, very good wet/dry street performance, very good packed snow/ice performance, very good off road/trail performance, provide decent mileage, and come in a LT285/70R17 size. I think that turned out to be the Cooper S/T MAXX:

I had the Cooper SST on my shortlist but still thought they were too MT derived and would be noisy over time, but never ran any Coppers in the past (not sure why not as I think they make a good looking/performing tire).

Anyone using these or have good experience with them? I only found a couple of folks with 4Runners that had them.

I will make my final decision once I see them in person and get more feedback. But so far, they seem to have pretty good reviews.

Did you ever consider the 295/70R17 size? I know they are a bit wider but it looks like they are a bit taller as well compared to the 285/70R17. I've been contemplating going with the 295, haven't seen anyone running this tire in that size. Thoughts?

Thanks for the compliment!

No, I am away on travel a lot for my business so haven't had the time to get my bumper re-coated due to the damage from shipping. It's still sitting in my garage looking pretty lonely. :(

Thanks Eric!!

When I am not taking the photos myself, I usually ask my ride buddy to take a few shots (typically my wife so luckily she is a good sport about it...lol).

Good luck on the build and post up when done!

I did but purposely didn't want a tire that wide; I wanted to go as large as I could without causing any component/body rub issues at full lock under compression and still allow the tire to travel some when four wheeling (even then I still had to do the body mount chop). The 285/70R17s gave me look I wanted on the aftermarket wheels without pushing it too far.

I'm loving what you did with your truck. I just got a 2015 TEP and want to start messing with it already. How is desert rat? Could you share ballpark of what they cost for your lift, wheels, and tires?
