Detachable Face

When buying an aftermarket HU, how important is it to you to have a detachable face? Reason I ask is that I am in indecision on an Eclipse CD3000. Has everything I want but I am iffy that it doesnt have a detachable face for security, instead it has some kind of of its own security feature.

This really depends, do you garage park? Do you live in a rougher neighborhood?

I recently had my car broken into in a pretty nice neighborhood. I now garage park, I had left the head unit face on.

Sometimes I wonder about taking my faceplate off, it could be a sign that I have a nice system in my trunk. But it could also shy thieves away.

i feel like that guy now thats always asking about audio stuff and never act upon it. well my budget is around $200 to $300. I have narrowed my search to 2 head units. The Pioneer DEHP580MP Premiere and the Eclipse CD3000. I live in a nice area but also go into Boston pretty often. Thats pretty much the only reason I am some what reserved about the Eclipse since it is not detachable. If you had the choice, which one? Eclipse and Pioneer or their Premier products are my top choices for the fact of getting a PAC unit that is a straight cable instead of infared to keep my steering wheel controls.

I would go eclipse over pioneer, but that is just me, I have had both and I prefer eclipse. I wouldn't worry too much about the deatachable face plate, everyone I have known, myself included used the feature for about 2 weeks and then just started leaving it on. If someone wants your stereo enough to break into your car they are still going to do it and check under the seats and in the glove box to see if that is where you keep the face. Eclipse offers a feature (usually) where you create a password CD or soemthing like that so if someone does steal it, they can't use it. Doesn't help once its gone but hopefully thieves might know this and be discouraged from stealing it.

you could get the pioneer 6800 which comes in the premire edition also for about 180$ and if your planning on intergrating your ipod it is the best head unit for an ipod by far, it comes with one big wheel that controls everything just like the ipod click wheel i personally own the 6800 so i would go with it but the eclipse is a good cd player too.

you would have to buy an ipod adapter box from pioneer for about 80 bucks but i think its worth it; i control all my music from my head unit and i can find songs quick just like on the ipod and you can tuck the box and ipod in your glove box away from sight and lock it for extra security

Like sketch said, the Eclipse HU have a security feature that makes a CD that is pretty much the key to your HU, W/OUT it, when you uninstall the HU, you cant do ANYTHING about it.

Most theifs will know better, and shun away from bothering, or they will be too stuipid, and you can have comfort in knowing that the perp cant get it to work.

I also belive that if you call to get the deck unlocked, eclipse calls you to tell you someone is trying to unlock it. Im not 100% positive on it, but i belive they do.
