Diagnose steering issue

I've got a '98 Limited 2wd 197,000 miles. There's some play in the steering. The truck tends to wander down the road. There's a shimmy when I brake hard, but the brakes are new so I don't think I've got a warped rotor problem.

How do I diagnose steering components?
