Diagnosing of Undercarriage Rattle

Hey Guys,

I have been hearing a rattle from the under carriage of my 2007 4 runner. The rattle seems to happen intermittently when I am idling in park and consistently when I idle in reverse. The car drive fines and shifts fine. The rattle goes away when I shift to drive and when the. Car is moving. Does anyone have a Idea what might be causing the rattle? Maybe a unhooked heat shield of some kind?

Grab all your heat shields and see if ones loose,that or part of your exhaust(pipe) is hitting your undercarriage.

Could be your muffler...

I replaced my exhaust system from the cats back this spring because I had started to get a rattle coming from beneath my rig, too. The sound on mine was coming from the muffler and after 12 years and 180,000 miles, it had finally given up the ghost. I went OEM on the replacement since I wouldn't mind getting another 12 years of out this ride.

My first suggestion is cat heat shield, my next would be possibly a loose/stripped/broken bolt on one of your skid plates/belly pans. There are 8 total so having one even a little loose can cause a rattle.

Put it in park and crawl underneath while it's making the noise.

Yea i had the same issue, and for me it was my heat shield, that rattling noise was bugging me for the longest until my bro in law pointed it out. I read some post in here that you can just remove the heat shield and it should still be ok, so im just gonna leave it on until i feel like replacing it.

only 1 cat has its shield left on my truck.. the exhaust at the spring joint between the muffler and ypipe makes extremely annoying rattle noise too..
