Hey guys, this is the first time I have logged on since this storm. Luckily, my house only suffered minor damage from wind. We are not near the water and at a high elevation so flooding is not an issue. Compared to what many other people faced, we are very thankful to only have minor issues. All of our cars survived- only problem is the 4Runner stinks from gas because we kept transporting gas back and forth for the generator. We did not have any power for 10 days, but luckily we found a generator two days before the storm that was a life saver. We were able to power 1 heating unit, refrigerator, 1 lamp, iPhone chargers, TV, and satellite dish. It was a very scary situation.
I actually was not home with my family during the storm- I had to work a 24 hour shift at the hospital. I went out during down time just to experience hurricane force winds and almost got clocked in the face by a flying metal sign (I ran back in). The morning after, I tried to drive home just to make sure everybody was ok. I had reservations at a hotel to spend my day off, but they lost power and couldn't accommodate any new arrivals. All of the roads were blocked by down trees so I had to drive all the way back to the hospital. The devastation is beyond belief. House blown off their foundation, large signs were laying on the road, cars thrown into the woods, trees uprooted and snapped in half like twigs, and roads flooded that you thought never wood. It was basically like a scene from a horror movie. Also, cell towers were knocked out in addition to having no power. We basically had no communication with the outside world until 3 days after the storm. The gas lines were insane. I never thought I would have to watch the gas gauge so closely. 2 hour waits were good days. It was one of the scariest times of my life. So many places in Staten Island and the Jersey shore that hold precious childhood memories are destroyed.
