Did I read about a fuel gauge inaccuracy issue...?

Hey Guys and gals, I recently took ownership of a 99 Limited. The spec for the truck says if has an 18 gal fuel tank. When I get down to the point that the fuel light comes on and I fill it , I can only get about 13 gallons in it. I thought I read somewhere that there was an issue with inaccurate fuel gauges on the 99 4Runner but when I called Stevenson Toyota (local dealer), they have no record of a TSB. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

ya there is that issue and with my 99 the gauge went way wonky. says it is full when empty and empty when full. no recalls or anything, but if u replace the mb on the gauge cluster i hear it fixs the wonky but not the accuracy.

Thanks man! Looks like you have the exact color scheme I have!! One more question...what the heck is an mb?
 
Mine's the same way, light comes on at like 13.5 gallons. I usually just set the trip meter and fill up before I get to 60 miles and I usually only fill up to 16 gallons or so.
 
The gas gauges in most of our 3rd gens are a bit temperamental. I created a post not too long ago discussing the fact that when I fill up to full it will shoot up to 3/4 and then slowly make it's way to the full mark. Other times it just goes up like normal. There are times where my gauge will show less fuel. I'll park and later get back in and it'll show more. Just have to be patient with it and make sure you keep up with your mileage. Get to know your average mpg.

Thanks for your response. I just got the truck so I really have not much of a clue as what kind of mileage I am getting, I guess I will get a can and put a couple gallons in it and keep it with me, That way I can see how long I can drive with the gas light on...
