I chalk it up to peer pressure from you guys, and the many unfortunate trannies that went through the pink milkshake......
I went with the B&M 70268. In at the top, out at the bottom. Not quite "stacked", there is about a .75 inch gap between the cooler and the condenser, but feeling the top and bottom of the cooler with the motor running, there is quite a difference. I used some wire protector sheath to cover the hoses for now, am gonna get some rubber hose sheath before I bolt up the belly pan. Took about 2.5 hours and 4 beers.

Interesting document. I have actually never come across a cooler mounted with the ports facing up. I am guessing most folks here have them mounted sideways or with ports facing down. I used the top fitting for the inlet using the radiator logic, and practically every vehicle I know uses hot fluid in at the top and out at the bottom. Thanks for the insight though....anyone have any thoughts?
 
I did ports facing down. Not too worried about efficiency, just wanted to avoid that pink milkshake. Had I known, though, I'd have done it the right way. :(

Of course I bought the TruCool cooler, not the B&M.

I had a discussion about this with Mt goat over on Yotatech which is why I started doing this research and found B&M's document...

I found alot of older walkthrough's for Fords and others that showed them putting the outlets down. I wonder if some of those didn't have an internal pipe that took the down facing inlet to the top or something like that. Typically it seemed these instructions just didn't specify an orientation, just showed it in pictures.

B&M's reasoning makes alot of sense to me. Any air in the cooler decreases the efficiency of the cooler, especially when you have a bypass in it. But the radiator flows top to bottom.

It appears to me that perhaps the reason for B&M's reasoning is because the tranny coolant system is a fully closed system, whereas the radiator is not (the overfill tank is not pressurized). An upflow design on a radiator would more easily cause fluid to be ejected through the overfill valve. The overfill valve will also allow air to escape the radiator, which the tranny cooler doesn't have, so that would be a big difference too.

Durrell, you might consider fixing turning it around. I just searched, and I can't find any real documentation for the tru-cool cooler, but it looks like it is pretty identical, so would have the same concerns as the B&M. It seems that B&M has actually done their homework on this issue and they say strongly not to mount it ports down.
 
Originally I installed a Tru-Cool 4454 with ports facing down. But, after reading on YT about how thats the worst way to mount it, I repositioned the cooler and while I was at it, upgraded to the big B&M 70274. With the B&M I mounted it with the ports facing up and I have had no problems with it (had it installed for about a year now). The weather here in Hawaii is almost always warm and a big cooler can't really hurt in this weather.
