Did something crazy yesterday

I traded my 3rd gen for an '87. Something about the 2 doors, removable top, and ease of swapping to a straight axle I just can't resist. Basically what are the 1st mods you all would suggest? I was told to swap the master cyl, thats cheap and easy, I would like to get a longer radiator hose to get it away from the intake hose and heating up all that air.

Wow, that is pretty crazy! Welcome aboard! What are your plans for the truck? That'll help us advise you, OH AND PICS

I'm assuming some seriousness off pavement if he's already fingering the idea of a SAC. Im surprised not more comments on the trade, what kinda shape was the 3gen in?
Now you'll be riding rougher, and lookin tougher!! These trucks are awesome, you'll see :-D

Yup it was a straight across deal. My 3rd gen was in decent shape, but not easy to sell. I had done a TON of tearing stuff up on the interior. The door panels I had fiberglassed for my 4" speakers. The front seats were pretty shot as far as the leather and foam tearing out.

Its a 22re EFI, the po was a freakin OCD person. He took it every year to a dealership had them give it a once over, and then he would take it to another shop that was reasonably priced and get the stuff fixed. He had the fluids flushed every 2 years or so. I have a manilla folder with records back until 1999 or so.

As far as plans its goin be my DD so nothing TOO big, bit I have some friends that are a little loony and want to SAC and give about 8" of lift right now. I plan to take it slow and start with the little quick conversions then go big later. Already looking for 33"s for it

Oh too dark here for pics ATM maybe tomorrow but I doubt it lots of hours at work this week

A small lift, 33s, re-gear and a rear locker and she will go most anywhere a full bodied truck should go. Mine is open front and rear and am generally surprised at what it will go through.

If you're happy that's all that counts. You're going to dig that removable top come summer.

You should be able to fit 33s with just a little fender trimming - you'll absolutely want to regear for them. If you want a quick cheap lift to reduce trimming to a minimum, ball joint spacers and some longer shackles in the rear will help. After that, I strongly suggest getting on the trail before you do anything else to it. The 1st gen is insanely capable off-road in it's stock config, and will easily induce pucker factor 8 well before it hits its own limit :D. Unless you're hitting really extreme terrain, 33's and 4-low (maybe a rear locker) should take you almost anywhere you want to go.

ETA - Ha! Crutchy, get out of my head. :D

Cool its got an inch or two lift already, but looks a little saggy in the rear. My buddy is going to help me with the re-gear etc. It needs a pinion seal asap, that thing is leaking everywhere. So that then tires step one.

It needs new ball joints pretty soon so I suppose while its torn up I can add spacers. I'll look for shackles for the rear. Where's the best place to look for these parts?

I always recommend Roger Brown at 4Crawler.com, because he's awesome and I like supporting the little guy. He sells balljoint spacers and custom length shackles on his site, among other things.

In fact, you wanted mods, go read his writups. He's done some pretty cool stuff to his truck.

If she is saggy in the rear then it is advisable to just replace the springs. Adding longer shackles with springs that are loosing their arch isn't really the way to go about getting the back end up to where it should be.

Awesome thanks you so much I really appreciate the info!

Probably just do the shackles when I do the springs then. I have heard of people using like chevy 3/4 ton springs you all know anything about that?

If you get new springs you probably won't need longer shackles (depending on the lift the springs give). Chevy spring swaps are popular but you will need to move your spring hangers. I would just snag some OME Dakkar springs, should clear 33s with those easy.

Cool, well one of my buddys (he's a Jeep guySo Gay ) was talking about reversing the shackles ad how that adds lift without having to even have a kit, so I am thinking about that.

1st things 1st though, Clutch and pinon seal this weekend then hopefully tires and some suspension work the weekned after. Don't worry I'll take pics of all the progress and stuff we do. I know how you all are about pictures :bigok:

I think the shackle reversal only adds lift if the axle is located on the half of the spring farthest from the shackle - pretty sure the Toy axle is in the center. It'll also change how the suspension and rear driveline behave, I'd research it before pulling that trigger...

OK like i said he's a Jeep guy so it might be different, it does look kinda as though the axle is centered as you said but i have to measure to be sure. Here's pics of the beast as requested.

Nice. At least you aren't rolling the stock deck. I'm getting really tired of listening to the radio. You should consider getting an SR5 instrument cluster. Having a tachometer, voltmeter, and oil pressure gauge is nice. :D

yeah that's coming after the clutch, brakes, rust, lift, or if i find the assy sooner then I'll do it. I might try to do a temp autozone tach this weekend when I do the clutch.
