Did they change the brakes?

Was just wondering if Toyota changed the brakes on the 5th gens or something. I had a 14 trail premium that had the squishy wet shoe sounding brakes that was very loud and pronounced, I now have a 17 TRD Pro and the brakes are totally silent, not even the slightest hint of that squish sound. Was wondering if anyone knew of they changed something.

I know this isn't entirely helpful but I recall reading something that there were modifications to the brake lines for the 2016 model year. I was driving a 2016 SR5 in California and felt they were slightly different than my 2012.
 
For what it's worth, my '16 Trail has a squishy sound when I press them. It doesn't really both me but would prefer it not to be there.
 
Toyota rarely changes anything mechanical. Easy way to find out is check part numbers...
 
One thing that this post reminds me of is how many t4r owners buy multiple t4rs within a single generation. It seems to be pretty common here.

I have to ask what drives this? The trucks are suppose to be so reliable and all and be such a good value.. yet many people seem to keep trading and buying new ones. Just wondering why keep buying the same exact thing...

I'm guessing some of it is the resale value.. but still.. seems like throwing money away driving up TCO.

True, a minor tweak in pad material... would probably not create a new part number. Any significant change would result in new part numbers for obvious reasons.

Yep. Personally I think they tuned the internal orifice a bit from the actuator.

What drives this is (IMO) vanity, and the need to always drive the latest and greatest. I know people who trade in new leased vehicles every two years, and those who buy new every five. They think it's "normal" to have multiple neverending car payments. I've never kept a vehicle less than 10 years, and only sold/traded because the old vehicle no longer met my needs (Camaro to small pickup to large pickup to kid-hauling off-roading SUV).

I totally agree with you; selling/trading in a perfectly functional 5th Gen 4Runner for a newer 5th Gen 4Runner is just throwing money away. Unless you are doing it to gain features the older version didn't have, such as trading an SR5 to get a Limited with AWD, or trading a 2WD for a 4WD.

If it weren't for a short extension/refinance due to set of braces for my oldest kid I'd be totally car-payment free by mid summer, but now it'll be early fall. :pout:

I can tell you why I do it... because life is short. I don't spend my money on boats or campers or ATV's or other off road vehicles. I don't do drugs or employ hookers.
The truth is NONE of us NEED a 4Runner. It's not a great tow vehicle. It won't haul a ton of gravel. A JK is better off road. A CUV is much better on road and more efficient. A van hauls passengers and gear better. A decent quad cab pickup gives you more utility.
Yes, trading every few years is a waste of money. So is buying a $$$$ light bar. So is buying a $$$$$ suspension.

So for those of you who live in glass houses I would think twice before throwing stones.

Vanity? I cut my own hair and my clothes come from Sam's and Wal-Mart. Give me a break.

Just to clarify, when I said "vanity" I was speaking of the type of person I was describing who trades in a perfectly good moderate-mileage vehicle every few years for no other purpose than to get the latest bells and whistles. Same for cell phones or whatever. If that describes your situation, then I stand by my choice of words.

On the other hand, some people NEED a new vehicle every few years. Specifically people who are always driving potential clients around and must display evidence of success. Real Estate Agents, lawyers, etc. Most Real Estate agents need a mid-sized SUV to carry entire families around, and lots have 4WD to get down muddy driveways for rural sales.

Others need a replacement vehicle because they've worn the previous one out. My 2011 only has about 70k miles, but some people put that many miles on a vehicle in a single year. Or drive extremely rough miles down mine access roads and such. Or down salt-encrusted roads up north. There are plenty of people who have flat-worn-out early 5th gens and replaced with a later 5th gen.

Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. Incidentally, I also cut my own hair... if it's so long I have to bother with combing it, it gets the clippers.

I agree with this... life is way too short. I spend money on all kinds of unnecessary Toys... But multiple 5th gens still does not make sense to me personally...

I mean if I bought a new off-road capable SUV every year or two.. I would at least throw in a GX, JKU to mix it up a bit. I get generation changes driving a turnover.. just not multiples within the same generation. I have zero desire to own a 2017 4runner over a 2010... unless the one I had was just worn out.

4Runner owners tend to do this often.. They also tend to over maintain their vehicles and enjoy throwing away money on service. Yet, they rave about how reliable they are and what a fantastic value they are. Just seems strange to me to buy based on reliability.. but only keep it for low miles. Pretty much anything will go trouble free for 40k miles these days.

Just curious... seems to happen here often.

Been averaging 100K in slightly less than three full years. I would have a full head of hair if I let it get longer than a quarter inch lol.

Not that I owe anyone an explanation on how or why I spend my money, but I did trade the 14 in on a 16 Rubicon Hard Rock, drove it for a year and decided to trade it for a TRD PRO. WHY? First of all because I can, and 2nd of all I also have a 15 Jeep Wrangler. Oh no, I've had it for 2 years, guess I better trade it in on something different.

Wondered the same thing after just driving a TRD Pro, they definitely felt better than my '14 Limited — which I might sell this year and replace with a TRDP.

Replacement might have something to do with vanity, but it's also because my perfectly good '14 shows frame rust and other chassis corrosion thanks to salted roads. Sure, it's still solid, but selling before it gets bad, before something breaks, while its resale value is still so high, makes better sense: the financial spread between old and new is, for now anyway, relatively small.
