Did they offer a 22ret in 1988?

I'm thinking about doing a turbo engine swap into my '88 4runner. However, in the state of California if you do a swap it must have come from a vehicle that is the same year or newer, with the proper smog equipment. So I would need an '88. Did they make one that year or was it an '86 & '87 only thing?

Yes they did.. Personally though the 15 HP gain over a 22re is not worth the extra bump unless you plan on going full on custom.. If you plan to do it with a stock setup it will not be money well spent.. You would be able to net a few HP gains just by machining your engine and having it bored over. Toss that with a header and exhaust you can easily achieve a 130 HP from 116 HP factory...

"Officially" it was 86-87, but there have been some late 85s and early 88s with the turbo engine.
