Diff drop need or not need with lift ?

There's no such thing as a diff drop for the 5th gen, it doesn't work like it does on older models or the Tacoma. It actually just clocks the diff slightly and improves your driveshaft angle. It did nothing for my CV angles at all. Choice is yours, I didn't notice any difference with or without it.

Yup. got diff drops on both the 4Runner and FJ.
The only drawback is it does drop the engine skid plate 1/2". Pretty minimal though.
Although slightly, it does in fact lessen the angle of the CV axle joints. And, causes no ill effects on any drive train components.
Is a diff drop necessary? Maybe not. But we think it's an easy to install, inexpensive, modification that likely will prolong the life of the CV joints and possibly even the wheel bearings.. Kind of silly not to do it.

Sub'ed for the s*#t storm.... have my kit standing by for a 2.5" front lift, and was trying to get educated too.....

I was at 3" for about 11K miles. Put the drop kit in about half way through that and noticed no difference at all. It was in, not hurting anything, so I left it. Only installed it because I had it leftover from my Tacoma otherwise I wouldn't have bought one.

Just for the record, I agree with the others above. Does it help anything? That's debatable. Does it harm anything? Absolutely not. It's a cheap feel good part that takes 15 minutes to install if nothing else.

As a 5th gen rook... what is fundamentally different about the 5th gen to make the diff drop not work the same, conceptually?
Just curious. No lift yet but didn't realize it'd reduce the skid plate ground clearance. Mine's low enough as it is with the KDSS.. altho perhaps that means it wouldn't be lowered on KDSS? lol

I'm not really sure honestly. I can tell you when I installed it on my 2016 Tacoma, I could see a pretty significant improvement in CV angles. When I installed it on my 2016 4Runner, I couldn't tell the difference at all.

Didn't run one on my Tacoma and had the lift for 75K miles. It does nothing.

I probably have a close to 3.75"-4" lift up front. I took photos to the best of my ability of before and after. I didnt see much of a difference. I am debating on taking it off. Its a ***** to put on the skid plate and I cant fit my new skid plate.
I'll try to dig up photos.
EDIT: I know photos are not super representative, but there seems to be no change in CV angles. I didnt really look at the difference in driveshaft, so I cant say anything to that point. I'll probably take it off this week and see the difference again if I have time before the weekend.

I say not needed. My CV angles after Icon Stage 2. Got 3" up front and 2" in rear.
Though I do have a kit sitting in my garage I might just slap on there for the hell of it one day.
What is your center hub to fender lip measurement in the front?

My primary concern is the pinion oiling. The high pinion design is tricky to lubricate. I don't know how far the diff can be clocked before it's a problem. Since it's not a big issue im guessing enough oil is getting there. But it wouldn't give me warm fuzzy feelings. Having seized a pinion before in another truck im more careful than I once was.
