i'm looking @ toytec lifts, and i want the 3".

however, there are two of them. one is $20 more, and includes a "diff drop."

i know a little bit about differentials, so i'm wondering, does this thing literally make the differential hang lower? or is the name deceiving?

Of course it does. Actually, it makes the front of the diff lower and the front axels about .4" lower. Its supposed to help reduce the cv angles and improve cv life, but in reality, it doesnt' make that much difference at all. Some people will jump and and down and say the diff drop is a must when doing a lift and its cheap insurance, but in my opinion and from the research I've done, there's no point wasting your money on it.

diff drop

Diff drop will help for the CV joint if you will lift 3". I drove my 4R for two and a half months without diff drop and the grease was spitting out from the CV boot. I installed diff drop and change the locking clips with plastic tie wrap and the grease stop leaking. For another $20 is worth the money. Other places sell for $40.
