Anybody change thier own diff/transfer case fluids?

Do you use stock Toyota fluids? If not, what do you use (I'm planning t use CRC brand Sta-Lube 85-145 gear oil - gives me better temp range variablity between diff changes.

Any body recommend LSD fluid in the diff's (don't think Toyo recommends it)?

Any body know exactly what size the front diff plug size is (silver fill/drain plug with female suare or torx fit (t-55 or t-60??)?

Inquiring minds want to know..:D

Diff lube

Hi Eric. I changed the diff and transfer case lube in my '98 shortly after I got it. Used Mobil 1 75w-90 synthetic gear lube to refill. I used this truck to tow a car for some 25K miles, ended up with 75K miles on it when I traded it in and had zero problems with the diff/transfer case.

Sorry, I no longer remember the sizes of the hex keys used to remove the drain/fill plugs. For obvious reasons, be sure you get the fill plug out before draining anything!

I also had the ATF flushed and refilled with Mobil 1 synthetic and had zero problems with the tranny, in spite of the major beating it took while towing 4,000#.

I believe Toyota recommends 75w90 for the diffs and transfer case. I tend to stick to what the manufacturer recommends, figuring I'm not smarter than the engineers who designed it.

Best.
