Diff fluids

I want to change my diff fluids,I have a 2006 4runner with the V8.
Owners manual says
75w-90 for the transfer case
90w for the front and rear diffs,(different for the V8 models)
is this correct,also is there an additive needed for the diffs.
What have you guys been changing your diffs with.Thanks

Most use 75w-90 for all three with no issues. Most here seem to use Mobil1, Amsoil, Redline or similar, premium diff lube. It'll be discussed more including quantity in the link provided above. There's a new service bulliten that says 75w-85 synthetic is ok. That's 'not a common' or easy to find weight. IMHO, just as they've lightened engine oil and transmission fluid over the years they are lightening gear oil for max mpg. I would not recommend putting in a heavier fluid than it originally was designed for unless you have a very special circumstance... It's not imperative to 'lighten it up' either, IMHO. The dealerships need to have SB's like this for real, mechanical reasons and for logistics. How many drums of gear oil do they want to handle/stock? I have to wonder if some of these bulletins, like this one, aren't driven by logistics.


You DO NOT need limited-slip additive. Our 4Runners do not have limited-slip axles. They are 'open diffs' as far as the additive is concerned. None of the three diffs use a clutch-type limited slip mechanism. It's the clutch-type that requires the additive.
