Differences in cargo space with 3rd row models?

Hello, I'm thinking about tracking down a used 4th gen 4Runner. We're a family of 3 and my daughter is about to turn 14 and quite tall. So, we'll have no use for the no-legroom 3rd row, but since we're buying used, we may not have a choice. I've read that one advantage of the 3rd row models is that the 2nd row can recline. If we got one with the 3rd row, I believe I can fully remove the 3rd row seats and put them in storage.

Now my question: If we did that, would the truck be the equivalent of a model that never had the 3rd row, except for the added advantage of having rear (2nd row) seats that can recline, or is there any *disadvantage*? Specifically, what if I want to fold down the 2nd row seats so as to maximize cargo space? Will the 3rd row model's 2nd row seats fold flat and give me just as much space as a non-3rd row model with the 2nd row seats folded?

If there's a difference between how the 2nd row seats fold out of the way on both models, any photo comparisons anyone can point me to (or post in this thread) would be appreciated. Thanks!

I believe I have seen a thread somewhere (maybe on 120) where someone removed the third row seats completely. Only downside to that would be the holes left in the floor and on the side panels.

Thanks! I hadn't seen that thread. I did see another thread which I'll try to find again and link to. So, based on the photos and the OP's comments, it sounds like you fold the whole thing forward. If I understand how the non-3rd row model works, you fold the seat cushions forward, and then the backs fold forward more flat (but with an incline). Can you confirm that?

Also, I know that the 3rd row model's 2nd row seats can recline. I thought I also read somewhere that the non-3rd row model's backseats can slide back/forth. Is that correct? If so, I'm wondering if the non-3rd row model might have a legroom advantage (when row is slid farthest back).

Yup I that's how my 2007 works. Pretty sure all the 4th gens with 2 rows are the same way.

The reality is there aren't that many 4Runners out there with 3rd row seating. At least around here. When I was looking at buying I would say it was maybe one in every thirty or forty that had 3rd row seating.

Is it also possible to completely remove the 2nd row seats on this model? That other thread that is linked to above had some photos with the 2nd rows orange latches labeled as "Release Switches".

And, again, for those of you without a 3rd row, if you could comment (and/or provide photos) as to how the 2nd row folds, that would be great.

No, the release switches are just to put the 2nd row back in their upright stance. It doesn't allow the seat to be completely removed.
I wish they did though.

The "release switches" keep the seats in that tumbled forward and upright position. It's just a couple bolts to get the second row out, though. I did it a few times when I still had my 4th gen.

Here you go. Some measurements of the Cargo space on the non-3rd Row.

Some things that may differentiate my measurements from others:

1. I have a sunroof so when I measured from ceiling to 'floor' I get less space.
2. I have the JBL sub - don't think it affects anything…
3. I have the double decker cargo system so again, the ceiling to 'floor' measurements in the back may be less.

The center console with cup holders is available in the 3rd row model. Just no burger tray.

No additional AC vents. Just the one that you guys have pointing back to the 2nd row. Really the 3rd row seating is worthless in the 4th Gen. No leg room at all for anyone over the age of 3.
