Different exhaust diameters

I am seeing that my 4runner seems to have different diameter exhaust then I was thinking it would have. From my understanding from reading the forum I believed that it should be 2 1/2" OD and I think the only part that is actually a 2 1/2 inch outside diameter is a section after the resonator. The rest of the pipe from the y-pipe back is closer to a 2 1/4" OD. I am putting on a magnaflow 18" muffler and am wondering if I should go for 2 1/2" pipe all around or just throw the muffler in there, lose the resonator and call it a day. Has anyone else found there exhaust pipe to be only 2 1/4?

By the way, it's on a v8.

When I had my muffler changed, I got a 2.5" Center In / Offset Out (Flowmaster 70 series) and the shop said it was right.

Thanks for the reply. That's what makes me think that something is either wrong with mine or there is some bad info floating around out there. I bought an 18" magnaflow 2.5" in and out but crawling under the vehicle reveals most of the pipe to be a 2.25" diameter.

Is it possible that your exhaust has been repaired before? I'm fairly certain that the rest of the piping, from factory, is 2.5".

Man it definitely could be possible. It looks like my tailpipe section is new than The section leading to and including my muffler. Both the tail pipe and the premuffler part are smaller than the short section after the resonator. I would like to hear if someone has measured there's.
