Differential fluid change

d'oh! I didn't know -- I will know for next time; of course, that may be a long way down the road for me.
However, perhaps I may see about switching to amsoil for the engine as well.
Too bad there's no synthetic tranny fluid out there for the '03+ models. I just want to make sure this vehicle lasts me a long time.

Okay, another stupid question...
The owner's manual states 3.2 quarts for fluid drain and refill. Obviously there is a lot in the torque convertor and lines/cooler, etc... How much total would it take for a complete change over to this synthetic?
It seems to me like I'd need a couple of the 2.5 gallon jugs, which would cost about $150 according to the Amsoil website. Correct?

You need a whole lot of fluid to flush out and refill everything so I'm sure it would be expensive. I believe I heard in the past that someone went to a tranny shop to have this done and they told him to bring 20 quarts. That is probably more than the whole thing holds but I think the flush/changeover requires more. (some wasted I guess)
Well, I found a shop locally that sells Amsoil products and does vehicle services. They will flush the tranny with Amsoil synthetic trans fluid for $229, which appears to be not too bad of a price considering how much fluid it will take and considering that includes the labor time to do it. I'm going to take my 4Runner in on Saturday morning to get it done. This should easily last 100k miles from what I'm reading about the stuff.

How often do you need to perform the differential service?

I couldn't find anything in my book about differential service unless you have a 4 wheel drive or drive your vehicle offroad. I just had my service done at 30,000 and my husband says that wasn't necessary. Just wondering if this is something that should be done that often if the vehicle is only driving on highways.

well its up to you, I am just saying that I am GLAD I drained all my old fluid out, it was black and the magnetic drain plug had metallic sludge on it. Differentials are often forgot about on 4x4 vehicles. I would recommend putting a synthetic lube in and get the old out. Its not hard, several members have changed the fluid themselves and its very easy if you want to do it yourself.
I plan on checking my fluid again at 40K
I changed it at 25K.

Also try any local Marine Stores, and look for a "lower Unit" lube pump.
Some auto parts stores carry them as well

Front Differential
Hey guys;
I'm changing my fluids this weekend and for the life if me, I can't find the fill plug for the fron Diff. I got the xfer and rear alright. Is there both a fill and drain for the front? I'm pretty sure the drain is the hex key bolt that I found. Could someone please post a pic? Thanks!

Do we need to add lsd additive to the rear diff oil when it is replaced?

If I remember correctly, the fill plug is located on the backside of the diff. It is a 10 mm hex. Always remove the fill plug first. That way if you cannot get the fill plug off, at least you have not drained the diff.
It takes about 1.5 quarts of 80w-90 or any synthetic blend gear oil. I did not use friction modifiers.
