differential problem - pinion shaft input bearing

I've got a 2007 V-8 2WD with 79,000 miles. I noticed a whirring sound coming from the right rear - rotating tires made no difference. Tire store diagnosed a possible bad wheel bearing and suggested replacing both sets of bearings on the rear axle. When I asked if the problem could be the differential I was told "no, we listened to it with a stethoscope and it's fine".

Tire dealer only completed one side before running into problems and said they had outsourced pressing the bearings to a independent shop that only works on Toyota / Lexus. Of course, tire dealer replaced the driver side bearings which was not where the noise was coming from! I went to the Toyota shop to have the passenger side rear bearings replaced, which resulted in a minor improvement in noise. The owner of shop verified there was a bad wheel bearing on passenger side. However, there is still noise coming from the right rear that is worse when car is cold, seems to get better once it has been driven 10 minutes or so, and becomes less noticeable at highway speeds. It's most noticeable between 20 - 40 mph. This shop says there IS a problem with the differential - the pinion shaft input bearing is going bad. The owner gave me a pretty technical explanation of what was wrong, and that it was an expensive fix. They drained the fluid and filled it with Lucas gear oil and said this was a stop gap measure that might help. He said if the noise got noticeably worse I would need to get it fixed, but that I might get another 2 - 3 years out of it before this happened. He said the "pumpkin" needed to be replaced, and the part alone was $1200. I have used this shop before and found the owner to be very honest and knowledgeable. Based on some other things he said I got the feeling he was encouraging me to get rid of my truck before the noise got much worse or it hit 100K, whichever came first... My question is this: what should it cost to replace the differential, and is it worth spending the money? I've already spent $1400 on the bearings and am not happy about spending more. I don't have the ability to do the work myself. Thanks for any advice or guidance you can provide.

no worries man it won't cost you near 1200 to fix that differential.

where are you located in NC I'm in the monroe area just south of charlotte and offer the shop of mine to any local members.

Anyway a stock factory 3rd member ready to bolt in and replace the old one is just under 700 bucks: Toyota V6 8''- Pickup, 4runner,FJ Criuser

Eastcoastgearsupply.com will ship it to you or you can pick it up in clayton NC they provide a 5 year warranty on the ring and pinion install so your worry free from mechanic mistakes as diff building is a work of art really. But it comes ready to bolt in and you just send your old one back as to avoid a core charge but they give you a 3 week window from the time you get the new third member (what the mechanic is calling a pumpkin) to the time they need the old one back. The new one comes ready to bolt up and roll down the road.

your other option is to purchase a bearing kit from them for about 90 bucks with a master install kit (comes with shims etc. to set preload and backlash of the bearings and gear teeth) and have the parts to rebuild the diff for just under 150-200 bucks then take the parts to a reputable differential shop and have them rebuild your old one. The final cost there would have to be determined by the drive line shop you choose to have the work done for you.

If you get the one from ECGS that is built and ready to go I'd be happy to throw it in for you. taking the old one out and putting the new one in is simple. I have some diff re-building experience but i wouldn't want to open that can of worms without someone a bit more knowledgeable than me backing me up lol.

actually.. superman3043 do you still have your factory differential or did you wind up selling it?

Sorry buddy, sold it to another member in Texas for a honey of a deal. Basically gave it away to him for $125. He had some issues installing it because apparently the mating flanges are different between the v6 and V8's. Hopefully he's rectified the issue by now.

You mean you don't want to rebuild another one?

Sorry man. Good luck getting this fixed. seems to be a common issue with 2WD's (or selectables).

I have a complete center section out of my V6. It is in perfect condition, but would need the flange swapped. I installed a Toyota locker so this is just taking up space.

My 07 has been making a whirring sound since I got it 60K miles ago. It's a steady noise that increase in pitch while under load regardless of gear. I don't hear it at all once cruising.
I'd swap the oil and run it unless it really bothers you. Then again maybe yours is way loader than mine.
