Difficult starting...sometimes

1993 V6 4runner 238K I have only had this vehicle for 3 months. Recently it has become difficult to start. It cold starts in the morning first thing without any problems. After that, if I try and start it it will sputter and die. Sometimes it will start and I can rev it up and then I let off the gas and it dies. I will keep trying to start it and then all of a sudden it will start and stay running and then it runs fine. If I shut it off and then start it up right away, it will start just fine. The vehicle ran fine for a couple of months and then started doing this. I was thinking maybe fuel related, but I guess it could also be a dirty electrical connection, due to the hit or miss way it starts.

Hi, you could test with a new fuel pump, when I did purchase my 4R (1988) the very first thing was a new fuel pump and a new fuel filter.

AT or MT (5spd)?
Good luck!

You might consider doing a fuel pressure check. With the ethanol in the petrol these days, it's hard on FI components. I had to do the regulator and pump a few years back. You'll need to lower the petrol tank to do the pump.

I will get a gauge and check the pressure. The thing that threw me was that it always starts in the morning.

they don't have the access panel under the seat anymore?
that sucks.

Usually just fuel from the cold start injector. When the pump heats up, which does not take much when they have seized, it just seizes back up. The pressure reading will tell a lot ( rest and running-if possible).

There is an "access panel", but it's only to disconnect the fuel line and the electrical harness. As long as the tank does not have too much fuel and the straps are not too corroded, it's not too bad a task. Toyota have upgraded(can handle the newer gen fuel) the pump and sender seals which are worth upgrading "while your in there" type of thing.

Solved. It was the fuel pump. I ended up cutting a new access panel under the rear seat. Did it with a hand nibbler from Harbor Freight for $8.99. Starts every time. Thanks.
