Digital Camera Suction Cup Mount

So I don't have the cash to get a cool GoPro, but I was wondering if anyone has come across any digital camera suction cup mounts that are good to use?

A quick google search came up with a ton of different options, but just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with some that worked.

Camera is a Cannon PowerShot SX210.

Isn't the GoPro mount also sold separately? They have a ton of mounting options that you can buy without the camera. I can speak from experience that the GoPro suction cup works extremely well--I've had it at highway speeds, and on the trail with branches dragging across it, and it held just fine. Still, when using at higher speeds, I hook a safety wire on it just in case it lets go.

Yeah they do sell those separately, but didn't know the mount would fit a digital camera.

Good point. You'd need to adapt it somehow if you wanted to use it, as the GoPro attachment is basically a hinge, while all other cameras use a screw into the base. Beyond the mounting system, though, you need to consider the durability of any other camera used in the manner of a GoPro--it is a shock-resistant design, with a durable sealed lens that other cameras won't have. If you really want to have a remote-mounted camera, you would probably do well to get something purpose-built for that, or risk destroying the one you hang out there.

What my purpose was going to be is more for mounting it inside the vehicle looking forward as it hangs from the windshield. I figured that would work better than me holding my arm out the truck holding the camera. I didn't plan on possibly beating up my good camera.

I just picked this up from Best Buy the other day for this exact purpose. I have a flip camera that takes great video and I can't fork out the money right now for a Go-Pro. I don't like the way it holds the camera, but the reason I went with this option is because the attachment part comes off. The rear plate also has some screws that will allow me to take it apart and modify it as needed. At least that is what I am telling myself.

The advantage of the Go-Pro is the self stabilizing of the camera itself. I'm going to live with this Flip for a while, but I am sure it will be a little shaky. As a matter of fact. Give me 15 minutes. I need to run to the store for my wife so I think I will go throw the camera in there, grab some video and throw it on youtube real quick.

Took a little longer than 15 minutes but here it is. For comparison I filmed a little mounted and a little handheld. I think if it was day time, the mounted would look about the same as the handheld in regards to stability.

However,15 seconds after I shot this, the suction cup let loose and the entire unit fell off the windshield. I will be taking it back tomorrow and looking into the option posted above.

Bottom line........don't do the Dynex from Best Buy.

After watching that video and seeing the lights vibrating to the point where each light became a round circle I would have to agree that I would not use that mount either! The good old hand out the window was much smoother!

I have an iPhone and got a LifeProof case from best buy (had a gift card). LifeProof also has a gopro adapter holster that I bought along with a gopro suction mount and an accessory pack with other mounting options. In all I think I spent around $110, spread out so it was affordable. It works great and I've used it many times.

As for mounting inside the vehicle, I have done this with success using a tripod in the passenger seat. I set it up with two legs on the seat, and one extended down to the floorboard in front of the seat, then strapped it down with a cargo strap for stability. This way, you have standard camera mount to screw the camera onto, and you can aim it however you want before filming. It gives a nice passenger-eye view looking out the windshield.

As promised, here is my review of this product. First thing I noticed was the quality and weight of the mount. It is by far the best one I have ever tried. The suction cup seems to really grab and I have run it around a few times without any issues. The last one I had would fall quite often.

The only issue I have is probably due more to my Flip camera than anything. Because of the height of the Flip camera there isn't a way to mount it to the windshield right side up. Once you rotate the arm around on the mount the top of the camera makes contact with the windshield so you end up filming the sky. I have found two fixes for this. One is by rotating the video in my video editing software. The other is by mounting it the passenger side window.

Both ways seem to work fine for what I want and the bottom line is I am very happy with this mount.

Nice thanks for posting your results with the new mount! Looking at your first video it seems that Youtube did it's image shake improvement to the video. But I see the second video it wasn't enabled for Youtube's image shake thing.

I used my new mount, the http://www.amazon.com/Panavise-809-...8&qid=1347826455&sr=1-1&keywords=panavise+809, on our recent T4R.org Classics Do Moab Trip, and the thing worked flawlessly. It is the same suction base as the Go Pro mount. I used the ordered mount to hold my still camera on the windshield during the entire trip. No problems at all.
