Digital Climate Control Problem

Alright, so I'm a new member to the site but have been lurking since I bought my 4Runner back in August. Love the info everyone provides. You all have been a huge help.

I have a '99 Limited 4Runner and have had some problems with my digital climate control. I've checked the search feature on here and can't seem to find anything that helps specifically with my problem.

Basically, everything works fine, except for the manual temperature control. When I try to change the temp up or down it tends to do its own thing, jumping around to whatever temperature it pleases. Again, everything else works fine. Is there a way I can fix this without spending an arm and a leg?

Thanks a lot!

Start with the basics, check for loose connections. You may want to get some electrical cleaner but make sure it is entirely dry before you install it again. If you do go with the cleaner you may want to shoot it with some compressed air to make sure you don't have puddles inside the unit.

Thanks for the response. By starting with the basic and checking for loose connnections are you saying I need to pull the dash out or is this something I can do from the engine compartment?

(I'm not particularly savy from a mechanics perspective and with this being my first 4runner I'm still learning what's what with the vehicle.)

I've got the same problem

2000 4R, Limited

Same problem.

I also have a volume knob on a home stereo that does the same thing. So must be common on dial-type knobs.

I am going to see if I can find a 'generic' discussion on the net concerning dial knobs that no longer work......

If you do ever 'discover' the solution, I would like to know how to correct it as well.

spydrga,

I can't say I've tried this yet, but I talked with my mechanic about the temperature control knob and he mentioned that that knob may pull out and it may just be worn. If that's the case then the simple fix is to find a replacement knob which shouldn't be too pricey. He said he sees this problem in Hondas and that he will usually starts with the knob before getting into the more expensive fixes.

I'll let you know if and when I do anything with the knob. Lately, I haven't had any real problem so I've let everything be.

Has anyone else dealt with this over the years? My unit is starting to do the same. I notice it does it only when first starting cold. Once warmed up some (the cabin) it works fine.

Would this likely be the actual knob? No need to replace the entire unit? It might be worth replacing entirely since occasionally the display freaks out and shows garbage for a few seconds. Pretty rare though.
