Dipped Wheels

Just dipped all 4 SR5 wheels on my 4R. See my thread for info.

I dipped mine last weekend but haven't had time to take any good pics. It's been dark every night by the time I get home from work. I'll try to get a few Saturday morning & post here. They look good, but I worry about the durability. Luckily it's pretty easy to do touch ups

Work sucked today, so I took off early and grabbed a couple pics as the sun was about to set on my way to drop the dog off for grooming.

Plasidipped FJ rims Rad mods wheel edition 2

Finally getting around to posting this project from the spring. I have had the rims on all Spring / Summer / Fall with zero issues regarding the Plastidip.

I have found that the surface tends to hold onto dirt / mud a lot more so than standard paint. I try and give them a soft cleaning with a sponge when I wash my car, but do not hesitate at all to BLAST :laser: them with the high preasure wash gun. So far again no issues with peeling or chipping etc.

Playing cards help contain the overspray so there is little clean up.

I believe I did at least 4 coats of spray with roughly 3.5 cans of Plastidip

Nice, I've been told that the cards are unnecessary but you believe they make cleanup easier?
You can get black lug nuts pretty cheap off ebay if you're interested but the chome ones look good on yours.

I agree probably not necessary since you are spraying black Plastidip on black tires, but wasn't too much of an added time expense to just pop them in between the tire and the rim.

They just came out with anthracite grey. You can get it at dipyourcar.com. My brother just ordered some to do his Golf TDI wheels. Once I scope that out, I may do the T4R.

This stuff holds up well. I put it on my Subaru, and by that I mean, the whole thing was plastidipped. It help up amazingly. no complaints.

BTW [MENTION=86500]mform[/MENTION] in your signature, t4r is spelled tr4 in your "gateway drug".

Looks pretty close, I did mine anthracite grey about 2 months ago. I would recomend using cards or tape to keep it off the tires though. In the past I have dipped wheels without and it usually peels off the tire easily. The anthracite grey will really stick out on the black tire and was a huge pain to get off.
Hind sight...if you don't want to mask/use cards put a thick coat of tire shine on the tire before you spay making sure you don't get any on the wheel. It should peel right off.

If you plan on leaving the wheels on the vehicle you'll want to put a trash bag behind the wheel to cover the rotor/caliper.

I took mine off because I didn't want to dip the lugs.

You don't have to mask the tire (deck of cards), if you don't MAKE sure you put some tire shine on the tire being careful not getting it on the wheel. This will make clean up a LOT easier. You'll be purposely over spraying the tire a good two inches, make sure you get a good layer. More is easier to peel off.

Take your time, you'll want the first layer to be about 70% opacity, let it dry then repeat. I out about 4 layers on each wheel, I've had better results going 6-7 layers.

Did mine a couple days ago. Wheels off, wipe down with cloth and water, then with cloth and brake cleaner. Just multiple light coats.

Haven't finished, but it will easily peel off sidewall with protectant on it.
