I just recently thought that i might need new tires, as I did the 'penny in the tread' trick. I have no expierence with buying tires, and was wondering if i could get some help.
Extra Info:
-mostly city/(paved) backroads. -needs to look aggresive.
-Dont want to trim or mess with anything for them to fit.
-Cant be too costly. -would like to do little maintenance and adjustments
-I do off-road when I can so must have good traction...also winter is coming up so good in snow is preffered aswell! 05 sr5 V8. Thanks much in advance! :lookout:

Goodyear DuraTrac 265/70R17 covers everything on your list.
-Great highway performance
-very aggressive looks but not noisy
-not too costly
-excellent off road performance
-excellent in the snow

These are a little bigger then the size you want but you get the idea.

Spiggie, first off I really like the all black look of your 4R.

Take a look at the Falken Rocky Mountain ATS, also called Wild Peak A/T. They have the agressive look you are researching for but are quiet on the road. Another selling feature for your 4R is they have a nice black sidewall that really shines when you use tire dressing like ArmourAll extreme tires shine. The 265 65 and 265 70 both are black wall only.

I researched the heck out of these tires because I live in MPLS thus I needed a tire that will be good in the snow as well as quiet on road. I cannot yet review the snow traction (thank God) but after all the reviews I read I almost look forward to the snow. I went with the 265 70 17, with no lift and I have no rubbing issues.

Below is the link to Discount Tire Direct, I notice the price has jumped $54/tire since I bought in August but they are still on the lower side of average. The weird thing is if you bring the Discount Tire Direct print out of the tire you want to the Discount Tire Store they will match the price, for example today you would save $15/tire if you went with the 265 65s. Their online store does not charge shipping and for me in MN there is no sales tax. Also there is only a $1.50 per tire mounting difference between buying the tire at the store versus bringing in a tire to mount. Play the game and save a few bucks.

Hmm this thread might have changed my mind on tires, as if I needed more options to consider.

those Rocky Mountain AT's look nice, also cheaper than the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors I WAS sold on until now, $200 less than what I was quoted at Fountain Tire. I'll have to research these Falkens a bit, I'm definitely after a good AT for all seasons but specifically winter.

I've put about 70K miles on my Pirelli Scorpions and on my last visit to Discount Tire (that's where I got them) the sales guy was clearly disappointed when he checked them and they were still good.

you still have some time left, but I would go ahead and purchase, better safe than sorry. I had miles left of my other tires, but one day it was pooring and they were struggling, so several days later I pulled the trigger on more lift and tires. Glad i did

How much time would you say? ...ya my tires have been slipping like crazy in this fall rain... strange though the VSC light doesnt flash.. however im only getting front wheel slips and very very very sligh (if any) rear sliding :sadwave:

Tire opinions are based a lot on personal preference and can change depending on budget. The best long lasting tire that works well in snow and surprisingly well on moderate off-road to me is the Michellin LTX AT2 but is at the top of the budget or over it for most people. The DuraTracs as pictured above have a good review so far and are in the mid to upper price range. I really liked my Nitto Terra Grapplers, really abused them, never rotated and got almost 60k out of them. Mid to upper like the GY Duratracs. Then towards the lower end of the budget you have Yokohama Geolander AT/S and the Falken Wild Peaks(Rocky @ discount tire) I just put a set of the Falkens on even though they came out this past spring and no long term reports yet. All the magazines reviewed them very well and the pricing was right for me. Of course you always have the BFG AT KO and several other ones in there as well. Hopefully this helps a little, Another good tire but not sure of pricing is the Bridgestone Revo.

If you go LT it means you'll be (A.) going down substantially in tire load carrying capacity, or (B.) running at least 12 extra psi, or (C.) some combination of the two. Duratracs are LT only and, in addition, are Q speed rated which is two notches down from the stock tire. They will generate more heat at highway speeds than a (P) tire and that LT, in particular, should run extra pressure over a tire that comes in (P).

I would go ahead and buy some, but you may have 5k or more left, to be decently safe

I have the Michelin LTX M/S2"s on my 4 Runner. I had the previous generation LTX M/S. They are one of the best tires I have ever had. Long life and a superior ride. Well worth the $$.
