Look for the instructions for the alarm system here. It’s posted plenty of times or see if the little book is in you glove box.
It will tell you what to do to disable it.

First thing, check to ensure your dome light door switches are working 100% of the time.
After that the door lock can be disabled in the lock system programming mode. You will probably need to spend more time searching this site for the necessary info than actually solving the problem, but it certainly can be done.
Check the FSM for instructions.

Interesting, I keep my dome light switch in the off position exactly for this reason, they work intermittantly. Not sure what they have to do with starting the car and the auto lock??
The PO installed an aftermarket alarm. wish I could just pull out the whole thing, but Im afraid Id screw something up. He also had 2 kill switches installed. In order to start the truck your seatbelt has to be on and you have to pull up on the passenger window control while turning the key! It drives me nuts. :crybaby:
Im not sure if the Owners Manual/FSM will be of any help?

My 2000 SR5 had a strange quirk when I would unlock via the remote. Within a minute or so it would re-lock if not started. Toyota intended for this feature to protect from intrusion if no doors were opened. Apparently, the dome light/door switch circuit informs the system that a door was opened, and to disable. Both of my front door switches were wonky, so I replaced them. I have not had an issue since.
In addition, my headlights are designed to shut off after shutdown when the door is opened (I generally leave them on, as my T4R does not have true DRL's). The sketchy switches created a problem with this, also, allowing the lights to stay on, killing the battery. Again, not a problem since replacing the door switches.
Here's a thread that may or may not help. Your 1996 may not work the same as my 2000. Again, it appears the door switch plays a role in the programming process. Changing how my locks work

I was referring to the dome light switch mounted to the door pillar not on the roof by the dome light itself.
Even with the dome light switch at the dome light ( roof)in the off position, the door switch still comes into play with the auto locks

His alarm has an actual auto lock feature, the doors will lock anytime they are closed if the feature is turned on. I think that also includes driving to. The doors will unlock when the engine is turned off and key pulled out of the ignition.

It isn't an OE system, that's for sure...
The only time a 3rd gen will lock the doors by itself (in original form) is if you hit unlock on the remote, then don't operate a door for ~1 minute. This is only a problem if your driver's door switch is not working/unplugged.
If you have an aftermarket alarm, they will often be set to lock the doors when the key is turned to the 'ON' position.
