I have a hose that I found disconnected sticking out of my firewall. What is this hose for? I have a 98 sr5 that I recently acquired.

Ah yes! That would explain the lack of heat from the front. Thanks!
May be it is leaking coolant so the previous owner disconnected it. If your heater core is corroded, the freeze plugs in your engine might also be corroded.
Where do you live?
I see a number written on the engine in your picture. May be you have a new engine and forgot to connect the hoses after the installation?

No, the heater core can stay open. The engine side of those two connections are under pressure--usually someone will just loop the hose from one to the other to keep pressure on that side.

The previous owner did replace the engine. My coolant level is fine so it's not draining. It looks like they did loop the hose like TheDurk mentioned. Is there a way to tell if it was leaking coolant?

1. Connect it and see what happens.
2. Rig some kind of water pressure test. You could take two pieces of hose and plug one and put a female garden hose on the other and then connect water pressure with a garden hose and see what gets wet.
3. Rig some kind of air pressure test. You'd need to plug one side and connect a fitting with a gauge and a Shraeder valve to the other side--or an air hose quick connect. Air it up to 30 psi and see if it holds.
If you have the pieces and access to air, I think I'd rig an air test. A leaky core would probably lose air real fast--it would be easy to tell and no mess in the truck.

I tested and it doesn't have any leaks. Does anyone have a photo of their heater lines and where they connect? When I ran water through the pipes it came out this hole here:
What kind of lines do I need to get this all connected and working again?

how much water came out? that's your hvac case drain. normally supposed to drain condensation that occurs on the outside of the evaporator. if the heater core leaks it could come out of there as well..
As stated above, that hole is there to drain water condensation that accumulates when you run the AC. The fact that water came out of that hole when you ran water into the heater core, indicates that your heater core is leaking. That would also explain why the previous owner bypassed the heater core.
You need a new heater core, if you want heat from the front.

your heater core prob rusted and was re routed to prevent the runner from constantly running out of coolant.
Its perfectly fine BUT YOU HAVE NO HEAT.
mine is routed the same way due to a bad heater core,that valve is for the condensation drainage and (in texas) when i run the A.C. Mine Drips like "cray cray" cause its hotter then africa outside but freezing in the runner.
your perfectly fine but if you want heat, just get a heater core off of rock auto for 50 bucks (just ordered one last night!)and then "un-reroute" the hoses, they are pre-formed so it should be self explanatory as to where they go. it got down to 50 degrees which is like the end of the world down here so im just waiting to the mail man!
