I'm pretty sure I'm getting a bunch of noise from the speedo cable. Add in the fact that its not calibrated to my new gearing, I was thinking of just disconnecting it for now. Can I simply disconnect it from the transfer case or does something need to be plugged into the opening?

If you leave it disconnected at the case you're likely to get that port filled with road grime and assorted gunk. If you have to do disconnect the cable at the tcase, I'd hack a piece off a speedo cable from a junkyard truck to screw in there to keep it clean.

Like KidV said, hack off a piece of speedo cable at a junkyard and plug it. Or, while youre at it, disconnect the speedo cable at the junkyard and just replace the whole cable? That way, if you do the math, you can still ballpark your speed, and mileage. I'm not sure what the problem is causing he noise with your cable, or what you're trying to get out of the truck, but if you're already the junkyard, in my opinion, you could just grab the whole cable and do it proper!
As others have stated, removing it at the trans end is not a great idea. You might see if you can just replace it. If it's an automatic, Toyota has stopped making that cable. They want you to use a cable for a 1992-. The kicker here, is, you also need to upgrade the speedo head in the cluster to the 1992 style as well. This is so the recepticles at the ends of the cable match up. The new gen cable runs about $82. We did this whole upgrade on our 1990 4runner. Hope it works out.
