distributorless ignition

Question: Aren't all 3rd gen 4runners and Surfs equipped with distributorless ignition? My 2001 3RZ Surf has no disty or plug wires. Are US-spec 4runners the same?

They have coil packs on one side and wires that run to the other side. So there's 3 -traditional- spark plug wires.

Interesting. What about the 3RZ? Mine is a 2001 and the 4 banger was not made available in the US after 2000. Maybe a switch was made to the disty-less ignition after 2000....
Any member with a 2000 or earlier 4 cyl please chip in, curious to know if they are distributorless. The reason for all these questions is because there seems to be differences in spark plug gapping between the 2001 and up versus the 2000 and earlier 3RZ-FE engines, and am thinking the ignition setup is the reason.

my 2000 3RZ had no plug wires at all. coil packs on top of all the plugs.

i think the older ones(96-98) had a distributor and wires

Well that settles that....can anyone figure out why the 2001 and up have different spark plug gaps vs the 2000 and earlier? The fact that the 2001 and up 3RZ was not available to the US market indicates that something was done to that motor. I know for a fact that around 2006-ish the 3RZ came with VVTi in select markets.

the 3RZ was available in the tacoma until 04 so that might be something to look at

My 00 3RZ has plug wires to the coils.

by plug wires i mean high tension leads.

I am out looking for info on this subject so I figured I would chime in. my 96 4runner has a distributor. I was messing with it today thinking of a way to make it a coil pack setup to make a turbo easier to fit in. or just scrap the whole idea and put in a gm 5.3

There's 3 different ignition systems for the 3RZ, the first couple of years got a distributor, the next couple years got a wasted spark coil ignition set-up, 2 coil packs on the side of the head with spark plug wires to the plugs. The later ones 01-04 IIRC,, got Coil packs on the plugs and therefore no plug wires.

I think the difference may be that the coil on plug 3RZ's use a different spark plug.

distributorless 1999 4 Runner with 2.7 L 3RF-ZE engine No spark problem

Hi I am new to this site, and there are not many threads written about this system, for which I am looking for help or answers.

I have been working on the older types of cars, i.e 1983Porsche,BMW,Mercedes.

My wife has a 1999 4 Runner Toyota and one day trying to leave the house and the car did not start! I checked for fuel, that is ok, check all fuses all seems to be good!
When I checked for compression and timing all seems to be ok.

But to my surprise NO spark on any of the two coils!! I replaced Cranckshaft and camshaft position sensors and also ignition switch! All new.
I have tried two ECU units to find out if that was the problem and still no spark on the system.

The security system is ok and function separately and does not have interference with the car ignition system.
The FOB is separate to open and close the car and engage the alarm system .Any idea guys? much appreciated.

The igniter might have died. It is known to happen from time to time. The part should be labeled "IGNITER" if you follow the wires upstream from the coils.
