DIY Extended Rear Bump Stops

I'm thinking of getting a square piece of steel, drilling holes in it, and making extended bump stops. I don't want to blow out my shocks during the first time hitting the trail. I am having trouble finding out the compressed and extended lengths of the stock rear shocks. The ones I replaced them with are Bilstein 5100's ->

(BIL 24-100144)
13.84" collapsed
22.4" extended

I'm going to try and do some math to figure out exactly how far these bump stops need to be lowered..or am I overthinking it a bit too much? I don't want to shell out $160 for extended bumpstops, but I do recognize their importance.

Yes you can just weld up some stops, make sure you make it so they have some way to wrap a bit around the frame, that way they dont spin and rotate when hitting.

Usually you want to lower them about the same as the amount of lift you installed. I bit the bullet while back and got SS and they are about 3 3/4" lowered I believe. I would have to measure. I now have a nice MIG gas welder, I was thinking of fabing up some for sale since no one really has a good cheap alternative.

You probably won't have anything ready by the time I need them, but I bought some Daystar rubber to add to my own fab-up this weekend. I could see there being a little market around here for something.

Yea not way, it will be long while, just starting to weld, need to get better. LOL
 
Hey Jayrolla, if you could measure them when you get a chance, that'd be a huge help. Just so I know what ballpark to aim for. Do you also happen to know how far a panhard drop bracket would drop the bar?

I saw that thread awhile back, but I thought some guys figured out they're too soft, and just squish when the axle contacts them? Otherwise that'd be perfect. Anyone actually try these out?

These really dont work out that well. Once you full flex and bottom out the blazer stops they are pretty much back at stock location. You want to lower the mounting with steel bracket. Not add extra rubber especially some old ass OEM chevy rubber. They just bottom out. Sometimes you can find some with good rubber but again I would rather have the steel mounting lowered than just adding extra rubber.
 
Can someone please measure their extended bumpstops, and let me know how far I need to lower my stock ones to be equal?

I would just measure the collapsed length of the shocks I have, BUT they're not perfectly vertical so I don't think my math would be right.

Anyone with the $150.00 extended bump-stops care to go measure? Thanks in advance!

Do you know how much lift you ended up with? If so, that's your extended bumpstop measurement.

Unfortunately I didn't take before / after measurements - I was too excited to get the lift installed. I can go with 3" and see if that works for me. Don't want to stuff the tires into the fenderwell (although I only have 265/65/16's)
 
IIRC you and I have the same suspension setup. I got just over 3" going from stock springs to the OMEs.
