DIY: Flaher Relay Mod(LED)-12 pin

I was sick of the hyper blink from the LED's I had installed. I have found a work around from searching the web and from experience. I went ahead and did this today and it works. pictures follow.

Dash with two bolts that are located on the bottom left and right. once these are off you will then pry the bottom dash away.

Dash pulled away. now detach the center lock and A/C circuit switch

Take the two bolts off that are holding this metal plate.

Take the top left nut off the fuse panel

Take the bottom two bolts off. this holds a bracket that supports the fuse panel

now the fuse panel will come down and give you access to the relay

Once the relay is open. Grab whatever tool you have available that can grind away the metal of the resistor on the relay. I used a Dremel with a sanding drum.

<img src="http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l26/tacticalcustoms/4Runner/20130622_111149.jpg?t=1371924648">

I ground off about half of the resistor. I kept doing little by little and then testing this on the 4runner to see if the blinker had returned to normal. you must make sure the left and right blinker are functioning properly before reassembling the relay.

ground down resistor.

final product.

Now reverse install and call it a day. And enjoy your non-hyper flash LEDS:rofl:

From your pic, I can't tell what part you ground down, maybe I am not seeing the right thing maybe so clarification please, and do you have drl's with all 4 leds? Thanks!

Running all leds and I have drl model. its the silver hoop

Nice idea on the mod OP! By any chance, did you happen to measure the resistance across the resistor before and after grinding? I'm wondering if you can actually replace that resistor with a potentiometer that has the same resistance range. I did exactly that in one of my old Hondas and I was able to adjust the blink speed to my liking by turning the potentiometer up and down.
morphious I am not sure how the circuit is laid out on the Toyota flasher module, but I remember on my Honda, if I put the incandescent bulbs back in it would flash half the speed of normal (ie. super slow motion, lol).

I didnt check before and after. But i put regular bulbs in for my drl and left led in rear worked just fine. However yesterday I received new cree led bulbs for my drl and when I put thosr in hyper flash came back. Reading on the tacoma forums. Im going to get three 2 watt .22 resistors and connect them in parallel. This will give me .073 resistance. Stock resistance is .020.

update

I went ahead and installed two .1 ohm 1watt resistors in parallel and it works great. LEDS all around.

Ohms law. When you use the same size resistor and you put them in parallel the overall circuit resistance will be smaller then the single lowest resistor. for example. 1 divided by (1/.1 + 1/.1) = .05 Where if they were in series. Ohm law states all resistance is added. which would be .1 + .1 = .20 resistance. So I achieve a lower overall resistance when in parallel. If that makes any sense. :wow2:

Why parallel and not inline?

Just did this and got the blinkers working right but now the flashers won't work...

:boom:

Any advice?

Btw I have a 2004 and my relay is an 8 pin. Oh yea and before this mod the 4way flashers worked fine but the blinkers were on hyper speed

Just added a third resistor to pull the resistance down to about 0.33 ohm and still the same thing. Four ways flash once quickly and don't repeat.

Could anyone know what range potentiometer i need to get so i can make it adjustable? i got led's for the front and don't want to change resistors if I do the rears.

When I did this mod almost a year ago, I did not use any resistors, but instead just ground that same strap a little at a time until it functioned properly. I am using all leds in front, halogens in the rear. I did this when i did the facelift. I have had a tail light go out and i knew right away because the hyperflash came back like it is supposed to. I also tow and have no problems with the trailer lights. Hazards always worked normal before mod and after too.
I thought about a pot, but couldn't get much info on the specs needed.
