DIY? Installing wires for a dashcam through the 5th gen headliner?

I had no issue running my rear dashcam wire all the way to the back. I followed the headliner along the tops of the drivers side doors and the only place where I had to fish the line was behind my molle panels where I couldn't fish by hand. I commented several times that these trucks are made to have dash cams. All my wires up front and to the back tucked right in under the headliner with zero issue. The front even has a channel up top that makes tucking cables extremely easy. Took me 5 minutes to run all the way to the rear, I thought it would take close to an hour

Does yours have the SRS side impact airbags?

Here's how I did mine. Barely any wires showing. Everything is hidden in the headliner.

You can use an add a circuit off the fuse box and run the wire up the a pillar, it will take maybe 5 minutes total. You can also tap off the mirror wires or wires in the overhead console. The a pillar plastic cover comes off with a single screw, it's about as easy as a vehicle project can get.


To get to the rear, running under the door sills and then up the back may be easiest path, but you could also just tuck it along the top.

this is what I did. didn't even need to remove the pillar cover. just used a plastic body trim tool to shove it in the gaps. literally 5 minutes and not removing anything.

After wiring up my dash cam I really wanted to hardwire my qi quick charge phone mount. It requires QC3.0 connection and I couldn't determine easily if any of the fuse box taps would support that so kept delaying the.

Heres the charger I've been running since 12/2020. No issues. I even have a case that holds 3 credit cards on the back and it charges through that with my licenses and 2 cc's in it.

The other day I found and ordered this OBD2 power tap.

Just installed it. I was going to try and tuck the larger USB end into the dash speaker well but for simplicity sake I just ended up switching the phone holder usbc cable to a longer one so I could run that down under the dash close to the obd2 port Now the cable goes straight back from the phone charger to the bottom of the window and tucks down into the dash and over to the pillar and then down the weather stripping etc. No need to remove anything.

Seems to be working well so far. Havent tested charging time for the phone yet though.

At least I dont have a cable hinging in front of the dash to the cigarette lighter port though.

Next up is QC 3.0 USB ports. Bought one but gonna return it since they have another one that has the harness to plug inline with the lighter...ie no manual splicing.

Keep in mind the airbags in the A pillar and side airbags under the headliner (if equipped). Blindly jamming wires into these areas could result in airbag failure or one of your wires hitting your face at 100+ MPH if the bag inflates.

I hardwired both front and read cameras and carefully and securely placed the wires so that they didn't obstruct the airbags. Not difficult, just takes a few minutes.

I installed my dashcam a few years ago by wiring it to the harness that goes to the rearview mirror. I used [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION]'s write-up in the Interior Mods sticky as a guide to which wires to tap into. His write-up is titled "Switch to Activate Backup Camera". I also used that write-up to connect my aftermarket head unit to the backup camera feed.

What kind of phones will be charging? Newer iPhones support the following:

- 5W (mini cube they used to include)
- 12W (2.4A - “the iPad charger”)
- PD up to 30W (made possible via lightning to USBC cable into a compatible charger)

*** iPhones do NOT support QC 3.0 technology - it’s only for android phones across several brands. They will charge the same as a 12W charger, but not 18W or 36W as they do not support voltage stepping.

I’ve seen pictures of the Dongar setup and I don’t think it’s as clean as a typical hardwire kit run from under the dash. That goofy heat-shrunk circuit board hanging there just bugs me.

I agree. That's why I hid my Dongar adapter up in the headliner along with the other cables.

Thanks, ended up having JUST enough cable to run it along the wiring channel at the bottom of the doors. Had way too much rolled up and stuffed under the headliner when I ran it along the airbags.
