Even then I go over the vehicle with a fine tooth comb after the work was done and find all the mistakes they make, to make them 'get it right'.

Even if you have a 'good' mechanic you should always check over the work as much as you can. Anyone can goof. I've found bolts not torqued down correctly, electrical connectors not connected, even one time a distributor bolt missing. I always tell them after. The honest ones look embarassed and apologise, sometimes give you a break or discount on something else. The crooks/jerks deny it or blame you.

I trust some greasemonkey under a shade tree (whose livelihood lives and dies by word of mouth) before I would a dealership.

I guess it's what dealer you go to but I'd trust the Toy dealer I go to before I'd trust some "shade tree" guy. My friend works for Toyota and he is constantly updated on all the latest tech and certified and they always back their work up but yes,all dealers aren't created equal.
I use both that particular dealership and my local mechanic (going on 9 years now) for anything I can't do myself.

I do it myself because it is siple and easy to access anything under my runner.

I don't trust anyone working on any of my vehicles. I do all my own repairs and maint. I haven't had any warranty issues yet and I hope that I never do. It's very difficult to find mechanics that are fussy like myself and take pride in the quality or their work.

50/50. Depends if I'm in the mood that day or not. I mechaniced for 15 years and now I travel alot. I do pimp out oil changes now. I really don't have time or an interest anymore.

And as far as pep boys go.. I wouldn't let them put gas in it.
