DIY rear pocket holder for 3rd gen..or any gen...or any car.

I always like other's cheap easy storage solutions so here's mine.

Took the pocket off an old external frame pack and put some snaps on them to attach to the left side of the rear cargo area. It covers the rear vent to prevent dust from getting in and holds rags, gloves and whatever else.

It doesn't prevent air from escaping when close the door or hatch as long as it's not over stuffed. You can of course use bigger/small pockets and change to any location.

You'll need to get some screw snaps.

While I do like the idea, you can just replace the vent so that it has the 1-way valve on it like it should have. No more dust coming in from the back:

Otherwise, dust is still filling up everything behind that panel (been there, done that!).

You can even use the 01/02 vent (yellow) that has a grommet for trailer wiring on it (can be used for CB antenna wiring, etc.).

I like this idea. There’s a lot of unused volume behind the vent so you could make a cutout and then cover the perimeter with your bag. The bag would have a lot more storage space.

You need an OEM vent? I have a 1998 back vent sitting in my garage. They just pop in with dimples on the back. I pulled it out of my parts mobile when I cut the corner out to rebuild Tetanus 1 back panel.

I need a new one, the flap on mine is curling up and not creating a seal anymore. Does it pop out from the outside of the vehicle? I've got an aftermarket bumper, I need to see if it has the space to pop it out.

Ah. It pops out your side bumper will have to come off to remove it. You could just pop the inside trim off to get to the inside of it. Maybe just stick some thin foam rubber in the inside to act as a filter and change it every few years. That way you wont have to mess with it. :] If I am not mistaken the earlier half of the 3rd gens dont even have a flap it's all open. I mostly put metal screen on the inside to keep the mice from trying to move in as I live in a rural area.

Ah. It pops out your side bumper will have to come off to remove it. You could just pop the inside trim off to get to the inside of it. Yeah I already stuffed it with foam a year or two ago. Need to change it out. Last excursion I noticed a bit of dust coming in. I'll take a look and see if I can pop it off without removing my aftermarket bumper.

They definitely all started with the flap - all the early ones have just fallen off (like my picture above from my '99).

The early white version with a full flap is 62940-35010

The later yellow version with the hole for trailer wiring is 62940-35020

Yup, mine must have all fell off years ago..

If you're cheap like me, you can cut out a new flap and glue zip ties to it. They fit through the original flap holes and make a decent hinge. Added an extra piece of cloth for bonus filtration in case it fails again.

I actually found one of the 5 still attached. Lol. I never saw one on there on any of the ones I had the side bumper off. Good to know they did start with something on there. I like the cloth idea but for me I need to add metal screen to seal larger holes and mice would love to make my vent fender their new home. Especially this time of year. Grr..
