Hope I never have to do this! Good on you for tackling it.
I’ve been spending my mornings and evenings working on the DIY article for Trail4r.com. I think it should be published in the next week or so. Until then If you have any questions feel free to ask here and I’ll respond.

Ordering a new rack tomorrow. I may reach out with questions!!!
The article is completed and submitted to the site. Just waiting for them to publish it. Should be soon!
I have a buddy at Toyota who told me awhile back the hardest part was removing the front diff. I'm sure a lot of other things need to be moved, but it seemed like that was the MAIN issue.
I didn't need to remove the front diff to get the rack out, fortunately. Although, that isn't super hard to do either.
Good to know. I fear I'll be needing to do mine eventually with all the off-roading I do. Besides the leak did you have any other symptoms of it possibly failing or going out?
Holy crap, Dude! This makes me almost glad that I'll most likely be dead before I'd have to replace mine! I read it just because I like to learn mechanical stuff but I'd hate to actually have to do that. Thank you for doing all that work to document this for all the guys here who will have to one day face doing this.
Alright folks the article is published! I've also updated the first post with a link. Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions. cc: Okusputokus
Steering Rack Replacement Step-By-Step DIY Guide For 5th Gen 4Runner
Xtremluck Awesome. Thank you so much for this write up. I'm doing a steering rack replacement for my girlfriends 2nd gen Tacoma soon. While not 1:1 this will surely help and if anything the Tacoma looks to be a bit easier. Did you end up getting new outer tie rods while you were at it?
