Agreed with all statements. Buying any car or truck should never be seen as an investment...it is a tool. This is not real estate, stock market or a retirement fund. Even as much as these vehicles hold value you'll never make $ off of it. In saying that, these trucks are pretty awesome, reliable and fun tools that can bring you experiences worth more than $ if you allow them to.

problem with mods is the bank will only loan book values for the vehicle, they don't add for mods. So either they have to pay cash, or have a big down payment to cover over book price. I see people lose lots of money every week on their 45k jeeps with every mod known to man, just because there's no way we can put more money than what a bank is going to loan on it.

Don't let that hold up your mods, just know that you're probably not going to get it back.

I've worked at a Toyota dealership. The best way to think about it is this, think of a stock 4Runner as the widest part of a funnel, the further you go with your build, the narrower that funnel gets. Typically accessories will residualize (have a retained value) of 25%. meaning, if you spend $1000 on accessories, expect $250 increased value on the vehicle. Your best bet will be to keep your stock parts and part out any mods you make that aren't permanent or transferrable to a new rig. Having said that, the enthusiast market is very potent (4Runners, Tacos, FJ's, Jeeps) and you have a better chance here than a tuned civic or wrx sti would at value.
