do all 3rd gens have rear heater

My 2001 WAS a base model....:fro: and it does not have the rear heater feaure which sucks b/c it is something I would like to have. How hard would that be to add to a 4runner that didn't have it? Under the seat over there is deeper so the unit would fit...just not sure about the controls and routing, etc....

my 2000 was a base model and it had the rear heater. i think it was a option on the base and sr5 and the limited probably had it standard. most of them had it though.

ya its not standard but can be added... i have an 02 sport and mine doesnt have it.

The carpet has a round hole cut out on it and it goes over top of the heater unit.

It would be nice to have had it (base model owner here) but I don't give a damn about my rear passengers... lol oh well

They weren't standard on Limited's..my 98 Limited doesn't have one.
it looks like I just got carpet out of one without the option. on further inspection it looks like it would be hard to mount it on top of the carpet, the hardware doesnt seem long enough. also the duct going into the conole to distribute the air doesnt seem like it would fit into the console right if there was carpet under it. I guess maybe I'll try it both ways

Like the man said, it goes UNDER the carpet. There's just a round hole in the carpet around the blower intake.

I was about to say... I've got a 98 Ltd 4WD and mine doesn't have one. Maybe that's why I have no friends. :moping:

My old '96 SR5 had it, but my '96 Limited parts truck does not.
The Wife's '97 & My '99 both have it.
The earilier models, I'm guessing pre '99, have the entire unit built into the center console with nothing under the seats (on the '97)
The '99 has the under seat unit.
I'm guessing this was done when the center console design was changed for the '99 - '02 models.

I have to admit, I have never specifically looked for the under seat heater on the wife's 97, or on my old 96.
My curiosity is now in full gear, and I will have to check when I get home from work.
But, I did search for the rear seat heater for a '96, & '99 4runner. Both came up with the same diagram.
I looked up the rear seat heater for my '87, and it is completely encased in the console, which is probably why I thought the '97 had it there too.
So, in a nut shell, I stand corrected.

Well, I would have put money on it, but my Wifes '97 does not have the rear heater. Oh well, I guess I don't know as much as I thought I did.

sorry to bump a super old thread, but this seems like a logical place to ask this seemingly stupid question that's been on my mind for a while:
-what's the purpose of the rear heater?
Is it's literal sole purpose to bring warmth to rear passengers? If that's the case, why no rear AC?
What am I missing
