99 sr5 here, i was wondering if i have a security alarm system, because i have the little keychain thing that has unlock, lock, window down and the panic button. i always thought if i have a panic button , that means there is an alarm system on it already. therefore i have the keyring thingy. but then i also notice i do not have the little red blinking dot on the dash whenever my car is parked and locked. I also notice that whenever i lock the doors , i roll down the windows, and i unlock one door from inside and open..there is no alarm.

...i always thought cars with the little keyring thingy had car alarms..that wat the thing was.

someone clear things up for me plz?

Yeah if you don't have the red LED blinking light, then you do not have a security system. Just because you have the remote doesn't necessarily mean that you have a security system. I thought that I had a security system for the same reason too, until I realized that it didn't have the indicator light.

You have a factory key-less entry system. Not an alarm but pretty handy to have opening doors and rolling down the back window, like you said there is a panic button to set off your horn on the back of the keyfob. So if someone gets into your runner no alarm will go off.

one way to check would be to hit lock while you are in the truck and then open the door. if the alarm does not go off, you don't have one :D

don't mean to threadjack...but sounds like OP got his answer...i have a 97 SR5, what is the toyota security deal beside the e-brake?

That is the blinking red light being reffered to early, it means you have an alarm, so if you dont ahve the remote door clicker, than you can get some and they will work.

If the doors are locked and you unlock the door by pulling up on the lock plunger, an alarm will activate. Also, you can release the hood latch, lock the doors, and then open the hood to activate the alarm. If neither activate an alarm, then you probably don't have one.

The thing i do that keeps getting me is locking the doors then going out later and trying to roll down the rear window with the key. Gets the alarm going everytime.

I recently purchased a '07 Sport. To the left of the steering wheel, I have the security indicator light (looks like a red LED with a symbol of a car with a key in the middle of it).

The problem is, this light never goes on. Do other 4Runners have this light, yet have it inoperative?

I don't think I have any alarm system, because if I leave the windows down, lock the doors with the remote, then open the door there is just silence (bummer).

Thanks!

(whoops, maybe I need to repost this on the 4th Gen thead).

bak3rme: if u dont have an alarm by testing out all these methods u can get one online and try to install it urself or u could go to a place like bestbuy and get one installed... Price depends on wat functioins u want the system to do. Like basic systems are cheaper but dont have as many fucntions as other high end alarms. I have a viper 5901 (installed it myself) for $250 but if u take it to bestbuy itll be around $550 installed.

Im a first timer here so pardon my mistakes. I bought a 99 base model 4runner with no keyfobs and only 1 steel key, so I know it doesnt have a smart key. My question is, there is a toyota security light to the left of the steering wheel. It has never lit up and ive never had an alarm sound or start up problems. Does my 4runner have an alarm? Or is that toyota security just for those that ordered the security.

The toyota security flashing red light is an alarm. However, some have been removed or unplugged. Being yours never flashes etc. Its probably unplugged or removed.

Like this thread says keyless entry and alarms can be separate.

Mostly base models dont have them but they could. As someone could have added it.

I have the same rig, same year and same security light that has never lit up. I also have a 2002 chevy tahoe with passlock. Be happy you dont have any factory security. It will fail at the worst possible times. My tahoe passlock and everybody else i talk to, has no start issues, security shutdown issues and lots of headaches to the point a company called newrockies has actually built a bypass module.
