Do I need Rock Sliders for Moab

Hi all, I'm planning on going to Moab in early May. Currently, I don't have rock sliders. So I'm curious if I really need them? I want them but right now cost is a limiting factor with other things that I have to buy before the trip.

some but not all trails I plan to take:
  • White Rim Trail
  • Top of the world
  • chicken corners trail
  • elephant hill trail


current setup:
  • 4th Gen 4Runner
  • Icon stage 2 (2-3" lift)
  • Tires - 275/70R17
  • no armor

I do want sliders, just can't afford them right now.
I probably should rephrase the question, if I don't have sliders should I not go on the trip and wait until I do? I'm trying to understand the risk.

I'm no moab expert, but from the videos ive seen, top of the world and elephant hill trail, you should have sliders. Check the videos on youtube.
 
I was just out there last week and ran Top of the World, your going to want sliders for that trail. You should be fine on Chicken Corners, but it's been a couple years since I've run it. I've never run White Rim but from the pictures I've seen it doesn't look too bad.
 
I'd put, "other things that I have to buy before the trip" on the back burner and get sliders instead.

Unless you don't mind some body damage. I don't like that stuff.
 
I ran Fins N Things and Hells Revenge with running boards and left without damage. Although, I was careful. I've read numerous reports that TOTW is getting where sliders are required. You can have a great time out there, but pick trails that don't need protection.

Thanks, Im going with others so that's what makes it tough. I can avoid obstacles that have places to go around but I don't want to be the one holding the group back when that's not an option.
 
I was on the Elephant Hill(image below) and White Rim trails last summer. IMO sliders are not needed on either one. Take care choosing a line on Elephant Hill. (Saw guys piling rocks to get their Outback in there.)

White Rim is little more than a rough dirt road. Well, maybe more than that in a couple places. I drove both in the '80's with a stock Jeep CJ-7 4-banger 4-speed. My wife drove most of White Rim in '90 in a stock Bronco II 4-speed (my son and I rode MTB's). My son and I rented lifted Jeep Rubicon Unlimiteds last summer. We turned around a short way around White Rim because we were told a large boulder blocked the trail.

OK, I'm not experienced, but I think the need for sliders depends mostly on how aggressive you are. If you're looking for challenging trails, get the sliders.

It will depend on the quality of spotters you'll have with you on the various trails. I led a group on Cliffhanger at Cruise Moab a few years back and one of the group had a brand new Tacoma without sliders or skids. We managed to get him through without so much as a scratch, and Cliffhanger is substantially more difficult than anything you're considering. Make sure you have somebody that knows what they're doing (be careful though since my experience has been that nearly anyone will volunteer to spot you, whether they have any clue what they're doing or not) and go over the hand signals they plan to use beforehand to make sure there won't be any misunderstanding.

Pay now or lay later sounds about right...

I try not to get too crazy with my truck, but the couple times my sliders did put in work they paid for themselves... i'm sure it saved some a few bucks repair cost.

I rather just pony up now... all things considered they really were not an expensive mod.

Get ones that stick out a bit more... good door ding protection in a lifted truck too in parking lots. Shopping carts should fear you.

White Rim and Chicken Corners aren't really crawling trails, and there's a couple spots on Elephant hill that you'll need to be careful, but Top Of The World will give a stockish truck all it can handle. If you know how to pick a line you won't need sliders, but you won't have much margin for error on a couple of the ledges. If you're at all not confident about your driving skill, you should really invest in skids and sliders before you take on Top Of The World.
 
I ran white rim and top of the world just last week. I wouldn't do top of the world without sliders. It's gotten pretty torn up in spots from UTVs and such. One guy I went with was there in just October and he couldn't believe how much worse the trail had gotten. I don't know if I came down on the sliders or not, but I did bash my gas tank skid, radiator skid, rear lower control arm mount skid, and rear bumper a few times. These are all aftermarket parts too. I'll be posting pics here sometime from my moab trip and you can judge for yourself.

White rim you certainly don't need them. This trail is totally doable in a stock 4Runner, you really only need 4WD for the real steep inclines so you can use 4Lo gearing. I'm sure that's a totally different story if it's wet though.
 
Sliders are nice but if you're careful then you can "get by" without them depending on how brave you want to be. I have a lifted 3rd gen so the body sits high so I've been lucky and have done plenty of things I probably shouldn't have without them but it's your call. I think if you can get them you should because it's just an accident waiting to happen.
