Rock Sliders

I’m contemplating getting rock sliders for my non lifted trail premium model. Does that sound practical? I don’t plan on a lift either, just wanting something more when out and about. I’m retiring soon and wanted to be prepared for some adventures.

Likely not a popular opinion here but.... Nothing wrong with getting the OEM set if you're not gonna do serious wheeling. Toyota has a frame mounted set of rails that run like $500 from the factory. I found a set on Marketplace for cheap that someone took off their new 4R. While they won't stand up to massive drops and smashes, they will do fine to protect the rocker panel from any wheeling I plan to do. Just a thought if you don't wanna go too crazy.

I found mine (OEM takeoffs) advertised classified on this site $300. Light rust cleaned up great.
I find the side protrusion minimal and do not hit my legs getting in & out.

From memory my used OEM slider U-shape brackets are 1/4 inch thick. The outer tube 1/8 inch thick or 11gauge. The factory bolts seem very strong and hard steel -I estimate grade 5 to 8. The attached strength per side easily exceeds the 4runner weight! Rust is steels weakness so I purchased plastic round end caps that I hammered into the (poor design) open ends of the outer tube. Now sealed against water intrusion.
I have no concerns about these factory rock rails/sliders holding up my light to moderate use.
The slightly rusty factory powder coat paint was thin on the welds (typical issue with sprayed on coatings). I used wire brush and a rust lock treatment before brush painting Rustoleum on all the weld areas getting thick paint where needed.

I removed my running boards and installed a set of the Greenlane aluminum sliders on mine, a year ago. Very happy with them. They weigh very little compared to steel rock sliders and yet they provide much more protection and are tucked up a lot closer to the body compared to the running boards.
