Do the headlights shut off automatically?

Twice I have left the headlights on in the 4Runner and came out like 10 hours later with no lights on, switch still in on position and starts fine. In all the years of driving I never left headlights on but have twice in 4Runner. So at what point do they turn themselves off?

As soon as you pop the door open.

If you want them to come back on when the truck is off, just twist them to OFF then back ON.

I wish it worked that way in my Nissan.

Is your 4Runner from Canada? Cause if I remember correctly, the lights on the Canadian ones turn off by themselves automatically.

The lights on my 98 will stay on until the switch is turned off or the battery discharges. :gun4: Never forgot to leave the lights on though, since if I open my door with them on, it makes an annoying warning noise that is very noticable

my 99 they turn off when you turn truck off. Now if only door locks would lock when you put the thing in drive.

On my '00 SR5, the doors lock when you turn the key on and unlock when you turn the key off. My '00 Ltd doesn't do that, so I'm assuming there's a way to program it to do that just haven't found it.

My '02 SR5 Sport locks and unlocks with the ignition, also. I think its a setting on the factory alarm system. It also hi-lo beeps at me after a set amount of seconds of being off which is notification of it auto turning on the alarm. Like I cant reach through the rear window and unlock my drivers door lock without the alarm going off. I don't even have a key fob for my alarm :/

My headlights turn off when I open the DRIVERS side door only, with ignition off. I think that would change, however if I ever get around to disabling the DRLs...?

My 01 Surf is a tad different. The doors lock when you press the brake pedal to shift from park, and unlock when the ignition is turned off. The lights however do not turn off automatically, wish they did. I also have that annoying beep beep when in reverse.

My 02's locks engage automatically as soon as I start the truck--wonder if it was a later-model-year add on with Toyota or if yours can be programmed to do the same...?

My lights go off as soon as I open my driver's door :thumb3:

Really? It beeps when you're in reverse? Any idea if that's an aftermarket thing that someone wired up to the backup lights?

It could be in the backup light bulb itself. There is an aftermarket light that has a beeper.

Locks that lock when you put it in drive is usually a dealer add-on. I personally wouldn't want that.

There is a timer that keeps power on to the truck for several seconds after you turn off the ignition on my 2000. So I can turn it off, and then lower the windows. Once I open the drivers door the power is gone.

The lights turn off with the drivers door opening, but not the timer. Once I had left the lights on and they had turned off automatically when I got out. I came out to the car to eat lunch. I sat on the passenger side and turned on the key to listen to the radio. Well, since I never opened the drivers door the lights stayed on for the rest of the afternoon and drained the battery. Its my fault because I took all the buzzers out because I hate buzzers.

Mine go off when i press lock on my keyless entry twice or they go off by themselves after a few minutes. 04 model

It may depend on where the Surf was originally sold. Some countries require safety mods on vehicles sold in that country.

For example, when I was in Kuwait, all of the vehicles sold there had "beep beep" alarms that would go off if you exceeded the 110 kp/h (I think) speed limit. This included US made vehicles like the GMC Yukon we drove as well as the brand new (2004) Toyota LC Prados we had. Since every civilian vehicle in the country had this (to my knowledge) I assume it was required by law for vehicles sold there.

OK,
I know this is an older thread but I have a question.

My 95 limited had headlights that turned off when you opened the door.

My 96 SR5 does not turn off automatically

LINY4Runner says his 99 turns off automatically

Can anyone confirm if a 96-98 Limited turns off automatically? If so I'd like to locate the relay of of one in a junk yard to upgrade my SR5.
