Do the headlights shut off automatically?

My 2002 Sport Edition lights turn off automatically as soon as I turn off ignition and open drivers side door.
Doors also automatically lock when started and unlock when turned off.

My '97 SR5's turn off automatically after 12 - 14 hours.

It appears there is an actual logic circuit built into the gauge cluster of the 99+ - though the FSM calls it a relay.

Really? It beeps when you're in reverse? Any idea if that's an aftermarket thing that someone wired up to the backup lights?

I realize this is nearly a year old, but thought I'd chime in. My '96 Surf has the reverse beeping as well, just inside the vehicle, not outside, another Surf quirk I suppose. I'm not sure about the auto-off headlights though, I'll have to try a few things out.

My lights also turn off when I turn the ignition off and open my door, however, a few weeks ago I returned to my 4runner after about 8 hours of boarding and it was dead. Luckily there was ONE more person leaving after me. I would have been screwed.

This was the only time I ever had this problem, but just thought I would chime in. Typically I never turn my lights off, and go days at a time without driving, and no problems. Just that one time...

My '02 SR5 Sport locks and unlocks with the ignition, also. I think its a setting on the factory alarm system. It also hi-lo beeps at me after a set amount of seconds of being off which is notification of it auto turning on the alarm. Like I cant reach through the rear window and unlock my drivers door lock without the alarm going off. I don't even have a key fob for my alarm :/

My headlights turn off when I open the DRIVERS side door only, with ignition off. I think that would change, however if I ever get around to disabling the DRLs...?

I have a 2002 with headlights that would always turn off when the key is removed. Last night I parked the truck off and didn’t notice the lights were on. Couple hours later came out to a dead battery.
I jumped it and drove home. The next day without the key, the drivers door open, turned the lights to on. Sure enough they were on. This is new behavior. I don’t understand how this could change.
Is it possible or am I just not remembering how it functions?

Sounds like your have a relay sticking. Quite common in older rigs. I included the
wire diagrams for the headlights with daytime running light and without.
