Dobbins vs 2.5” coilovers.

I’ve been reading a lot about suspensions, and it’s getting me no where. Lol

I’m intrigued by the dobbins stuff, but I keep hearing how the bigger shocks are the better way to go. Who is running Dobbins suspension, and what do you think about it? How is it compared to stock?

I have a full Dobinsons kit and really like it. I'd love to have a nice set of Kings but I can't justify it right now. Dobinsons meets all my needs for a lot less. Keep in mind I don't live out west and don't have a chance to fully use a set of Kings out west in the desert. Daily driving and offroading, Dobinsons is perfect.

I won’t be doing any desert running either.

How would you compare the ride to stock?

Also, Did it lift it the correct amount it says it would? I hear some springs lift it higher than what they say it should.

Much better than stock. IMO stock is too soft.

IDK about stock weight. I have winch, bumper, and sliders. I have 302's with long travel struts. Gained the estimated 3". The rear 325's seemed to give a solid 2.5". I am happy with the lift height.

I’m in the same boat. I wanted to do 6112s with 285s but now I hear they may not be returning. Ive been watching the Dobinsons thread grow with nothing but satisfaction. I can’t do a big lift right now because of interstate driving and my small offspring need to climb in and out. So anyways I’m considering either the Pro suspension or Dobinsons. Dobinsons seems to be the way to go.

Not to come off sounding like a smartass, but Dobinsons has 2.5” coilovers (MRR line). I assume you’re referring to their regular struts, but thought you might want to check into them and/or be more specific about the comp. Best of luck.

I saw that. I need to look in to them too. There’s so many choices. Lol

Intriguing thread. I’ve got the Pro suspension on my TRD and it is a much nicer road ride than the stock was on my wife’s SR5. Feels tighter on the street with less dive. Very capable and proven off-road in the mountains last summer. We did upgrade my wife’s stock suspension to 2.5 Icon’s, and I can’t believe how good that suspension is, both on and off road - no regrets at all - even with a 3.5” lift the truck feels more stable in every way than stock.

Pro suspensions are pretty inexpensive right now. The only issue with mine is that I get a bit of an inferiority complex when I park next to my wife, so I’d like to get a 2” lift at least.

I have no experience with Dobinsons, but if you’re not looking to lift I don’t think you can go wrong with the Pro suspension.

Thanks for the feedback. I hear different reports on how long the pro stuff can go before needing to be rebuilt. That kind of turns me off.

Dobbins has a 1” and 2” spring coming for the Pro suspension. That might be a cheap way to lift yours.

That could be a good way to go. Thanks. I don’t have enough miles yet on the pro to have any empirical evidence about rebuilds. The icon folks said 45K miles.

This thread is great. Thanks for sharing guys. I started to look at different Dobinson set ups. Even emailed back and forth with Mike the US GM. With all this said I’m still lost with what set up to get. I wasn’t 2/2.5 all around and keep my stock rack. Which springs to get is an on going battle. Also I now have this idea of not going with their shocks/struts and go with 5100 and their springs. Idk. I’m trying not to have to buy new UCAs. Ideas?

I went with the Dobinson MRR setup. Main reason - full warranty on remote reservoir coilovers and rear struts. Hard to beat that.

Performance-wise, they are very compliant off and on road. I am very impressed.

Wait, I thought you sold them and went Icons lol

The Dobby's are not rebuildable. And that is appealing to me about the Icon's in the end.

The Dobinsons MRR Shocks are fully rebuildable, but there are no fuse-like elements in them that make us say that "they may need to be rebuilt at 20-25k miles" like some other brands have in place. That's a main reason why it's a full 2 year replacement warranty, if it's not a simple fix.

It's not the most exciting video in the world, but here's a breakdown of how they come apart and what's involved in rebuilding them. We just don't offer the rebuilding ourselves here.
