Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Need some spring guidance.

Mike,

I need some help on spring rates, this is my very first build so apologies if I'm providing too much or too little info. I'm getting the IMS 50574 for the front and 50701 for the back. I plan on running the front at 2.5" lift with new UCA's. I would like to keep rear lift at 2" or less but not sure if possible with the weight I have.

I don't have anything on the front right now but may get a bumper and winch at some point. I have 560lb constant load: roof rack, RTT, molle panels, fridge, gear and drawer system. I probably add 100lb max when loaded for a trip. I'm planning on getting sliders within the next 6 months that would add 90lb. Not sure if I'm supposed to include myself but if so that's another 160lb. The molle panels, fridge, gear and drawer system are centered over the rear axle. The rack and RTT (250 lbs) run up to the windshield.

This rig is my daily driver and I commute for work, so on road comfortability is just as important to me as off-road performance, I'm not rock crawling or running very difficult trails.

Here's what I need help with:

Are the 302 springs fine for the front or do I need to increase that spring rate because of the additional weight towards the front of the car from the rack and RTT? Would the 314s be a much stiffer ride without the added weight of a winch and bumper? If it's not a big difference I'll just do the 314s now and save myself the future hassle, if it is a big difference I'll upgrade the springs when I eventually add the bumper and winch.

Not sure which direction to go on the rear springs, most of the springs that support my weight are 2.5 in of lift or more and I absolutely don't want to go to 3". Will the 701v realistically sag to about 2.5 since I'm at the high end of their weight range? The 329 are also an option but I'm at the lighter end of their load rating and was worried about the ride being very stiff. I'm not married to Dobinsons on the rear springs, open to other brands if they will give better ride quality for my specific build.

Thanks!

Hey bud

Yes, you'll still use the C59-302 coils up front. Then later if/when you add more weight, you adjust up the coil seat height to regain lost height. Using the 314's without any added weight will give at least 3" of lift.

Not sure where you're getting 2.5" from for the rear coils. Look at the first post in this thread. These are what you'd need. You'd be a bit too heavy to run the C59-327's.

C59-329 - 600-800LB super heavy rear load weight, 2" lift. 410/410mm, 18mm wire, 286LB

701V's are 3" lift coils.

Sorry I was just looking at the variable rate springs but I don't think any of those will work, looks like 329 it is!

You said I'd be a bit too light for the 327s, assume you meant too heavy? I'm 160lb over their max load rating.

Hey Mike, I have a 2019 4Runner SR5. About a year ago I had 4 Bilstein 5100 shocks put on along with the Westcott Designs preload collar kit so I have a full 3 inches of lift in the front. They also installed spacers on my factory rear coils in the back so the truck sits completely level with nothing loaded in the back. I'm also on 33" tires now.

The issue I'm having is that I frequently load about 300 lbs. worth of tools in the back for work and when I do, it squats almost a full inch in the back and I can't stand that look. I only spend about half of my time with tools or gear loaded though, the other half of the time I'm running completely empty back there and I have no aftermarket parts adding weight to the back and at this time I don't plan to add any.

I took before and after lift measurements and with the rear coil spacers, I'm sitting exactly 1-1/4" higher than stock in order to get completely level. I'd actually like to get a little bit of rake back so I don't mind sitting at 1-1/2" or even 2" of lift in the back, I'm just afraid it will look silly if I go any higher than that.

I'm looking at Dobinsons rear coil options and the C59-505 looks like it will put me where I want to be height-wise but I'm afraid it will sink so much that it will squat slightly again with the 300lbs+ that I often throw in the back.

On the other hand, the C59-327 looks like it'll do great with my tools loaded but I'm hesitant about the roughly 2-1/2" it will sit at when I'm running empty, plus I'm guessing the ride will be noticeably stiffer when I'm empty?

Is there any other option, even from a different brand, that I should be looking at that could better achieve what I'm looking for?

Sorry for the lengthy post but I really appreciate any help you can give me!

Hey Blake

Yes, the 505's would be ideal since you run empty quite often. Those coils drop about 1/4" for every 100lbs added.

The 327's would be considerably taller and stiffer too. They drop about 1/4" with every 130lbs added

These other OME coils are the same stronger rate as the 327's, but not as tall, so they might fit your bill best, but keep in mind that you'll have a pretty strong spring rate when there's no weight back there.

Thanks for the info! I totally forgot to mention, I have the 3rd row seats in my 4Runner which if I understand correctly adds about 100 lbs. compared to a normal 4Runner? Does this info change your recommendations for me?

Also I'm struggling to find the height over stock that those OME coils would put me at, do you happen to know? Thanks!

Yes, that's about 100lbs extra. Same parts, just adjust for the bit of added weight.

Those OME coils are about 1.5-1.75" of lift.

Ok thank you, one last question:

Looking at the OME 2895 (the non "e" version), it looks to have the same spring rate as the "e" version but I'm guessing would put me around 2" of lift in the rear? But considering I have the 3rd row seats, when I'm riding empty in the back I would likely sit around 1.75" of lift, does that all seem correct to you?

2895 are almost the same as C59-327. You'll still get 2" of lift with those.
