Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

I am running the 265s. Wanted to keep gas Mileage close to stock tires. You will not be disappointed with the tires. I put an average of 400 Miles a week on these tires with about 15000 miles on the current set, and they are holding up very well. They are bit more noisy then stock, but not bad at all. Not sure where you live but these are great in the snow. Much better then the KO2. Makes for a great all year round tire up here in New England.

I was scared with 265s the wheel well would look too empty. But your truck looks good! Now to see if Dobinson's can make me something similar to your setup with their struts instead of the 5100s...

I've had my setup for about 3,000 miles so far and I can't say enough good things about these springs. They ride amazing. Feels stock confortability-wise.

Has anyone done the C59-300 / C59-325 setup with Dobinson struts/shocks?

I'm looking for a very mild lift and keeping the ride as close to stock as possible. I am otherwise totally stock and don't ever carry any extra weight. Since the frame is nearly level as it the truck comes from the factory (around 0.25" forward rake) I'd like to keep it as close as possible.

What I don't want is *more* rake than OEM to the front and the Dobinson parts list 1.75" front and 1.75-2" rear.

Coil Spring Rates? Options

Does anyone know the spring rates of the coils and increase in spring rate vs stock coils? The PDF spec sheet only suggests coils for application (i.e. if you are adding weight) which is also very beneficial but I like data and numbers!

I'm curious to see how the stock front and rear compare with the Dobinsons mild lift options

Front Coils: C59505 or C59-300
Rear Coils: C59-325

edit:spring rates on first page of this thread...thanks sn_85

Fronts I'm looking at upgrading shocks to 5100's, and either setting front to 1.75" or at 0 and getting Dobinsons coils but want to get rid of the nose dive and improve on/off road handling ($ a bit of a factor here).

Rears I'm looking at the 5100s and was looking at either 1" spacers (not too keen given I've read they might produce undesirable riding characteristics) or Wheelers T13 coil option (12% increase spring rate over stock) but stumbled upon this thread and am now intrigued by the Dobinsons offerings with 35mm (just over 1") or 50mm (just under 2").

I do want to maintain some positive rake similar to factory look as this is loaded on weekends (kids and gear) and occasional towing of utility/camper trailer but don't want to sacrifice ride quality driving around town unloaded.

All this said, I would like to find a setup that is slightly stiffer to eliminate nose dive and improve handling (read: slightly less body bobbing) and be able to drive around town during week without feeling harsh but without compromising the 4Runner's handling while loaded...the latter being more important due to safety considerations with more weight and occupants on highway and backroads.

Sounds like I might be asking too much...?

Dude, spring rates are listed in the very first post...

Everyone using either our struts or the 5100's so far has reported back a considerable difference in nose dive, so I think this will solve your problem. I'd only suggest the struts at the 0 setting unless you're specifically looking for a lot of front lift. With everyone running 5100's and our coils, I suggest the 0 setting at first, so that they don't overlift the front end and end up not happy with it. A little too low is better than too high in my opinion on the front end.

I'm running the C59-300/C59-325 w/ their GS59-574/GS59-701. This puts my lift at about 2.75" front (because of the LT front struts that have a perch that sits 1" higher) / 2" rear. I would say my 4runner sits pretty level w/o much rake. (There is a picture in the previous posts). I can't really give you an accurate ride feel contrast between stock and post lift because I'm running some e-load k02s. However, I would say the ride is just a tad bit stiffer than stock.

I am looking for basically the same results from a lift as you – mild overall lift and have a little less than factory rake. I was considering the Dobinson C59-325 coils because I didn't want to lift the rear a whole lot more than 1 inch and I didn't really want to go with spacers. I was told that they were currently not in stock and probably wouldn't get here for quite a while. I ended up ordering a set of the wheelers T-13 coils because I saw a number of posts mentioning that they got around a 1 inch of lift with these coils. Started doing some additional research after ordering them and found even more posts indicating that they got closer to 1.75 in the rear with the T13s. I hope I didn't make the wrong choice on rear coils because I really only wanted to set my front 5100s at 1.75 on the stock coils… I haven't been able to find any pictures of a truck lifted 1.75 in the front on stock coils and the T13's in the rear....

For Mike and the rest of the members, for the rears, if I went with C59-599 rear coils (20mm/0.79" lift) or C59-505 rear coils (35mm/1.38" lift) is it absolutely necessary to get rear shocks? I believe I've seen rigs on the forum running the 1" Cornfed or 1.5" Daystars with stock rear shocks. Or is it a whole other animal with the coil stretching out the shock limiting its ability to function as designed? I'm on tight budget so was thinking if I could upgrade the rears later but get a small lift out of coils for now that would be ideal.

For the fronts, the C59-238 (0.75"-1") option in theory would be a nice compliment if doing the mild 0.79" lift C59-599 in the rear and would essentially be a front/rear lift ratio of 1:1 to maintain factory rake that I'm hoping to keep.

Front coils would likely be paired with 5100's (set at 0) or Dobinsons. Perhaps a novice question, but could I eventually set the Billies at 0.85" with the 0.75"-1" Dobinson front coils to achieve a slightly higher lift...understanding that I would be preloading the spring?

Your rear shocks will pretty much be topped out. Can you do it and have others done it? Sure. It's not ideal and the truck will ride terrible.

I'd personally save up and do it right, the first time. Preloading springs is not ideal either. Lots do it but isn't ideal either.

It's not much of a stretch to buy coils and shocks/struts for well under a grand total from Mike. Skip the coffees for a a few months and save up!

You can check the shock length yourself. Jack the truck up from the hitch and measure the extra couple of inches new coils would lift, then you'll see the lack of length. When shocks top out, it pulls the shocks apart pretty quick, so they won't last as long as usual. But if you were just going to pull them off and throw them away anyway, you could run them for a little while.

People are running 5100's at higher setting with stock coils all the time. Yeah, you can do it, it's just more ideal to use a longer coil if possible. We have a longer travel struts, GS59-574, and it has a coil seat taller than stock, but then because it's also a longer strut, it doesn't preload the coil as much. It's essentially the same as putting the 5100's at 0.85 and gaining a bit more lift. I still recommend the lowest clip setting and the tallest/longest coil possible for the best ride. That's why the C59-448 coils are considered 3" comfort, long coils with a soft spring rate.

starbucks is a great place to see heavily modded 4runners......:reddance:

Hey

I am also quite intrigued by system but also look to the ARB BP51.
I would like to throw the question in the round if the ARB system is that much better to justify a more than double price.
Main activities would be overlanding, no heavy offroading or racing, but still fast driving through/over bumpy roads.

thx

Apples vs oranges. The ARB BP51 is an adjustable coilover, rebuildable, monotube design with remove resevoirs designed to compete with the likes of Icon, Kings, Fox, Radflo. A more direct comparison would be the vs the Old Man Emu Nitrocharger shocks which is very similar to the Dobinsons being that they're both non-adjustable, non-rebuildable, twin-tube shocks. Difference in price between those two is less than $100.

Thanks Mike.

If you're not in a hurry, I'll be installing the C59-599 Rears and C59-300 Fronts on 5100s the whole way around. Once Mike gets them into the states and forwards them my way I'll be getting them on and I'll be sure to post photos. Fingers crossed I'll have them in by the end of the month. My desired goal is lift/level but low enough to get into my garage, throw the kayaks on the rack without too much trouble, etc. I anticipate the shock/spring combo will ride quite a bit better than stock.

That being said....Mike, what's the story on these C59-505s he mentioned. Is there a reason they're not in your chart in the original post?
Perhaps those are the answer to my fears about having the carolina squat with the 300/599 combo

Woops, I had forgotten to add them. They were a new coils we requested to be made, 15mm shorter than the C59-325. They are coming in our inbound container in about 2 weeks.

We wanted a coil right at about 1.25" for those wanting 2" in the front and just over an inch in the back. The 599 coils were just a little short, so we split the difference.
599's are 390mm tall
505's are 405mm tall
325's are 420mm tall

Each 15mm is about 1/2" height difference.

C59-505 - Stock rear end load, 1.25 to 1.5" lift. 405/405mm, 17mm wire, 220LB

We definitely wanted to give everyone the exact option they need, even though it has us stocking a million different part numbers. LOL

Oh, and we have our R&D TRD Pro parts in as of this morning, so we're about to start working on seeing what coils we have that can swap onto those TRD Bilstein struts, or if we have to make new ones, we will do that too.

I just got my 2017 TRD Off Road in Naut. Blue with KDSS. What suspension would I nee dto do actual rock crawling, like Fins and Things in Moab. I also want to add skids, sliders, bumpers etc.

I am new to the 4Runner, but not to off roading. I have run Fins and Things, Poison Spider many times in my other rigs, just looking for advice as I have never had a KDSS system.

I've also run Fins and Things many times. Here's what I've taken through there.
Hummer H3
2002 Tacoma 4 door short bed
Jeep JK 2 door
Jeep JK 4 door

Of all of them the Taco was the most fun, especially locked front and rear.

A very good friend has run through a lot of Moab with a stock 5th gen, not TRD or anything

You don't need to do anything. Just run the truck how it is!! Unless you start adding a lot of weight and losing height, then you might want to swap out the coils to something stronger. With your suspension, we can easily swap in our coils. You are a little limited with KDSS with the maximum flex, so our rear long travel won't work.
