Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Fantastic service.

Fantastic product. The C59-701V variable rate springs were the perfect answer to my needs.

Thank you Mike!

I told myself a million times that I would like to keep my truck as stock as possible but I keep hearing great reviews from owners running Dobinson's coil and shocks together. Just want a small lift with some better shocks that can handle rough roads with less of a floating feeling (2017 SR5-no KDSS). Though I would like to specifically hear more from the guys or gals running the C59-238 front coils and the c59-599 rear coils. I would like to go with the comfort shocks because I don't offroad or carry heavy loads. I do a tow about 3k every couple of months but that doesn't even cause that much sag even with stock suspension (maybe an inch if that). What has me so intrigued by Dobinson's kits is they are better valved and offer higher spring capacity than OEM without sacrificing too much comfort. I drive in NYC a lot and need the suspension to soak up and soften the rough potholes. In the past I have used Bilstein 5100's on various Tacoma's and have never been too happy but have not hated them either. The initial impact is very stiff until you hit the shock cycles which is good. My wife hated riding in those trucks. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Joey,
Check out my post on the previous page, I wrote up all the before and after measurements. Or email Mike at Dobinson and ask him.
I don't have a third row seat, I do have a drawer system at about 150 lbs. with gear.
That's about what the third row seat weighs. I still have a slight rake so when I load camp gear I'm about level.

That Dobinson's setup should be smooth enough for your needs. I've installed 300/599 combo with comfort shocks on my TEP and absolutely love the ride quality/ stability improvement. Firm without being harsh. No towing (yet) but I'm certain that would not present any challenges.

Thank you Rack and ScottR for your replies! Both of your trucks look great with stock tires and some lift. I don't carry much stuff in the back (no 3rd row) until my wife and I go on road trips with our 4 and 2 year old. I am assuming I would get a little more lift in the rear than you Rack because of no extra weight. The 300 coils look awesome but I think the 238 with suit me just fine especially being I put about 25k miles a year and its main family vehicle.

Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - lots of choices

Dobinsons Mike I have a 2016 4runner with KDSS. I'm waiting for an aluminum front bumper from CBI and I'm going to add a winch ~ 130 lbs in total in front.

Right now I'm about ~3" all around with the setup below. Will C59-314s help me to keep the front at 3"? It seems that in the Non-KDSS lift the springs say 2" with 150lbs. How did you manage 3" in front with your bumper?

Front
C59-302R with GS59-700, and ToyTec 0.25" spacers

Rear Springs:
C59-325R with GS59-705, with passenger side 10mm ARB spacer

Yep, you sound like many previous customers - didn't want to add a lift, keep it as stock as possible, etc, but that's the danger in logging into this site all the time!! hahahah

C59-238 with GS59-700 in the front would be a good setup to eliminate most of the front nose dive.
C59-599 with GS59-705 would pick it up a little, or you could even keep the stock rear springs to keep that height and just add the shocks. That works to keep the roof height low, and if you don't load up the rear hardly ever, then you don't really need the extra spring rate. Or our C59-323 are stock height rears, but with a bit more rate than stock to help with loads and cornering. The shocks alone help stabilize the vehicle in corners, while also ignoring more of those annoying bumps from expansion joints and dead hookers in the streets of NYC.

There's a lot of satisfied wives running around now too with Dobinsons, thanks to their husbands buying on here. I've got 2 ladies right now quoting directly with me actually.

Hey man.

By using the GS59-574 struts with longer travel and a taller seat height, they add 1". That's what I run, 574's with 314 coils.

So you're running 302 front coils with 1/4" spacers on both sides? That makes sense that you'd be at 3" with that setup. 314 coils with ~130-150LBS would be closer to 2.5", so with the spacers still, you'd be at 3" at the end of the day with the bumper added.

I recommend you add the weight, see how the height is and how it feels, and then decide if it's worth the money to change it out. You might like the way it is.

Dobinsons Mike

Current setup:
2014 Limited with 3rd row, daily driver, 90-95% on road, east coast trail rides, no desert runs or rock crawling
OEM XREAS with 3”/2” spacer lift & diff drop kit
285/70/17 tires
Pelfreybilt aluminum front bumper (probably +40lb net over OEM bumper components)
Second battery, +25lb
(4) Aluminum skids, +50-60lb (complete guess)
Roof rack, +90lb
Sliders, +90lb

What are your complete system recommendations for same amount lift & similar ride quality if I dump the XREAS system? I would plan on getting aftermarket UCA’s.

Thanks for your input!

On the front:
GS59-574 with C59-302 for 3" lift with the extra weight. Then add UCA's and keep your diff drop kit.

On the rear, C59-325 with GS59-701 for 2" lift with the extra weight.

You'll gain a much better ride with new longer coils and shocks than using the spacer lift that you're currently using, as it really won't compare.

Got system as recommended by Mike above installed over holidays, except for UCA’s as they are on back order. Will install once I get them. Very happy with result. No real difference from XREAS suspension in daily driving and normal road bumps. But more compliant with larger obstacles like speed bumps and humps. Haven’t taken off road yet. Really Like the red coil and black shock color combination.

With the front setup, the sway bar just barely rub the coils. Have ordered a sway bar relocation kit to fix this.

Before ground-fender measurements with 3”/2” spacer lift:
LF=37”: LR=37-1/2”: RF=37-1/4”: RR=37-3/4”

Dobinson suspension:
LF=37-3/4”: LR=38-1/2”: RF=38-1/2”: RR=39”

Mike you are a gentle and a scholar! Thanks for that info and I am sure the hookers will appreciate it...:lmao: Is it possible to swap the front shock out with the 574 strut to level it out if I decide to use the factory coils? I don't do any offroading.

Yeah bud, I keep them dear to my heart... LOLOLOL

Yes, you can run the GS59-574 with stock coils to just add about 1" of lift. A couple of guys on here have done it.

Installed c59-300 In the front and c59-723 along with dobinson struts and shocks over the weekend, rides exceptionay better then stock on and off road. No noticeable lean with the taller passenger rear springs.

Thanks for posting the pics--just ordered the same set-up, can't wait to install it.

And thanks Mike for the quick email response on my questions!

Ok, last question before I install. UCAs should ship today. PHEW.

Did anyone have sway bar to coil contact with 302 front springs. Do I need a sway bar relocate kit?

I'm also thinkin i will need the bump stop blocks for the back from toytec before I load up for trips this spring.

My sway bar is barely contacting bottom of my 302 coils and that is with the 574 shocks which have the bottom coil pad 1" higher than OEM. A normal height coil pad could be worse. I also have OEM UCA's as I am waiting on Dobinson's UCA's as they have been on backorder. I imagine the very few degrees of caster will not change the contact at the bottom of the coils so I have gone ahead and ordered the Toytec sway bar relocation kit.

Good to hear you are thinking the same as I. I will be installing the 700 coils with 302 springs. I didn't see anything on the Dobinsons site otherwise id go with a Dobinsons SB relocate kit.

Mike lists a part number in first post of this thread, but like you I didn’t see it on the website. The link you posted is the kit I got. I will be installing tomorrow.

That's really odd, there shouldn't be any contact. Which orientation are the struts installed? The lower notch where the coil sits should be facing rearward on both sides. (5th gens face rearward, 4th gens face forward)

We do have a sway bar drop bracket kit, but they forgot to include the radiator support brackets, so we don't have them listed online for now. Still waiting for those extra parts to arrive.

Dobinsons Mike are you suggesting I don't need a SW relocate kit to install 302/700s? Or is that just the case for the taller front struts?

Also, what are your thoughts on a bump extended rear bump stops?
