I really do have too much stuff going on at one time, but I couldn't help but jump on this. The guy was going to scrap it, so I worked out a deal with him, and it was CHEAP.

M996 HMMWV Ambulance body. This is going to be mounted on my M116A2 Genny trailer, to be my Bug Out Trailer/Expo Trailer.

Probably a little over kill, but you know me.

I think it's going to be epic.

My plans with this are not to be able to take it EVERYWHERE I go. I plan to take it to the areas that I will be setting up camp at, and possibly further if the trails allow. I know this is going to be top heavy, making it somewhat unstable, but I think I might have thought of a slight solution for that, but only time will tell.

Plans for this trailer:

-Field Shower
-Heat/AC
-Parts Storage
-Possible extra fuel cell
-Fold out table
-Possible sink
-Possible small stove
-Internal 120V power
-Sleeping accomidations(duh.)

I'm going on 2hrs of sleep, and I'm gonna be up the rest of the night. I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

Working on some designs for the inside and outside, will post those up when the time comes.

This is going to be a SLOW build. Something I'll be lucky if anything gets done to it before the new year, besides picking it up. Working on trying to get a 2nd job, so that way I can have more money for my projects.

Anyway here's some pics of a M997 Ambulance, and the trailer I'm modding to put it on. I'm getting JUST THE BODY, not the HMMWV(though I wish I could get them both.....) The M996 is just an older version, but same dimensions. Just doesn't have the CBRN capability.

It's still get the heater, which is a diesel heater, and the NBC equipment in it.

Haven't decided about takin the heater out or not, but well see. If I can find something 12V heat/AC, I'll put that in it's place.

NBC stuff is coming out, possible putting a water tank or something else on there. Depends on the space.

Or, maybe I'll mount the water tank on the heater side, and the AC/Heater on the other NBC side, seeing as how it drops down.

Decisions decisions.

Nice score doc! Man we used to fight over sleeping in the ambulance during field ops. Comfy way to spend the night.

Just thinking out loud doc but if you plan on mounting that thing on the trailer it's gonna have a wicked high cg.

If I were to guess on the body I would say 400-500 with equipment inside. This is the first time I have seen the body removed from the truck.

It was a awesome on cold nights. Crank the truck, turn the heater on.

The only thing that sucked was that we couldn't mod the ambulance portion. This one will be.

The CG might be a bit high, but I think it'll be fine. I don't plan on taking this thing over any crazy trails. Just somewhere to get camp set up.

Should probably score a winch, just incase though, huh?

Call me crazy but you might be able to take the platform off your jenny trailer and drop that 996 right on top with a little frame modification and that way you lower your cg a little. There's so much that you can do with this it makes my mouth water. You could even make a fold out wall with that sucker and have a covered porch.

I think nearly all the wounded end up in Germany after all the transfers.

Usually it's an air transport but yeah. When the 996 was being used it was pretty good. It had room for doc to work in, heating and a/c, NBC filters (nuclear, bilogical, chemical), lights and o2 on board, and in a pinch surgery could be performed in the back.

There was only room for 4 litter patients, and then in a pinch you could get another couple walking wounded in.
As a side note and I'm sure doc can chime in much more completely on the medical side battlefield trauma isn't so much about comfort and consolement. It's more about saving your life. They can fluff your pillows in Germany or wherever the rear area happens to be for that war.

They had us practicing on live pigs for a time. They would be shot, sliced, chopped, stabbed, mashed, and squished. You would be very very surprised what pigs can live through. Pigs are very similar to humans and it has really helped battlefield medicine.

Not any more.

The 996 was designed to hold two litters, a driver, assistant driver, and one Corpsman in the back.

The 997 is designed to hold 4 litters, a driver, assistant driver, and one corpsman.


If you think about it, you're never more than 20k AT MOST from a Forward Operating Base(FOB).

These were intended to transport wounded from the area they were wounded, to the nearest FOB. They would then be treated at the BAS(Battalion Aid Station) on the FOB, and MEDEVACd by chopper to a higher echelon of care.

HOWEVER, the use of the 996 and 997 has just about come to an end. HMMWVs aren't very IED friendly. Now, what they do, is sent a NATO bird, usually a BlackHawk, to pick up the injured at the point of injury.

The 997 is used on Large FOBs to transport patients on the FOB, should the need arise.

I got mine for 300.

Actually, I bought a M105, one of the big *****es that goes behind the Duce.

Straight traded that for my M116A2.

Has the 37s, run flats, and the pintle.

Plan on gettin some TWF rims some time, and keeping those for trail use.

Either run 37s or 35s on a 16.5" rim, double beadlocked. That way, should something happen on the trail, all I have to do is take the rim apart and change it out.

The use these now. MRAPs.

Mine Resistant Ambush Protected.

The difference between these and any other vehicle out there is that these have a "V" hull.

This allows a blast from an IED to be directed out from the vehicle, rather than the blast hitting a flat bottom.

They're designed like Legos. The joints are the weak spots. The drive shafts are bolted together, both from the trans and from the diffs. This allows the wheels and such to blow off, and not make such an impact on the vehicle. All you have to do is swap parts. It's pretty amazing what these things will handle.

They also have 1" this steel plates on the bottom of them.

They are also using these. M-ATV.

The "M" takes the place of the MRAP, and ATV is All Terrain Vehicle.

These are basically the same principle as the MRAP, but in a lighter, more agile package.

Better suspension, ect ect.

Still have the 1" plate on the bottom and the "V" shaped hull.

NOW, IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT THESE ATE NOT INDESTRUCTIBLE.


I've seen the survive hits of 80 lbs of HME(home made explosives), and people walk out with a couple bruises and concussions.

However, I have also seen them take hits with 100+ lbs of HME, and be ripped apart, killing everyone inside.

They're awesome, but they have their limits. Just like everything.

There's a website for that and it's auction style selling. Google government liquidation and it will be the top result or the second. I would love to get into a trailer but at this point since I still live on base pmo would have a field day with me even if they were wrong. They already don't have anything to do out here and I don't feel like making my butt cheeks into a sports arena.
