Does a 295-70-17 fit in the spare compartment?

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience trying to fit a 295-70-17 tire under their car, more specially a 295-70-17 nitto trail grappler. I currently have a 285-70-17 KO2 that fits like a glove, but I'm planning to upgrade to 295's in the near future.

I really hope it fits because I would hate to carry that thing on to my roof rack.

If you have on-board air just store the spare at 15psi or so. If you trash a tire on the trail it'll save you from airing down, lol. It should fit N/P that way.

That's a good idea! I didn't think about storing it with low psi. I'm sure I can squeeze it in there with 15 psi.

You have to move the rear mount by cutting it out a rewelding it. It's not a fun job.

I've got a worn KM2 285-70 as a spare and it barley fits. I don't know that a 295 will fit without some modifications or storing it aired down as Antman suggests. The BFG is a little small for a 285. I'm currently running a Cooper, which is a little large for a 285 and plan to switch out my spare to one of these worn tires when I put new tires on later this summer and I'm not sure it will fit. I'll find out when I try it.

To the best of my knowledge the spare is not on the TPMS.

Interesting... Ill double check my 5th gen spare.

I know for a fact my 4th gen SR5 does, so I made an assumption they all do.

I buddy has a 295/70/17 KM3 fitted on a TRD off road, no modifications but it hangs low. IMO too low just a click up from the diff

As for sensor my 2018 pro doesn't have a sensor in the 5th wheel

I talked to a guy on IG who runs 285/75/17, and he said his Nitto Ridge Grapplers fit in the spare tire location under the trunk too!

However, it does hang low as well (although not any lower than a 285/70/17 I suppose, since they are the same width!). I probably wouldn’t mind having it as a cushion anyway.

Does that actually work? This is a heavy-duty radial tire we're talking about here, not a party balloon. It won't change size much if at all in response to pressure change. And with 15psi in an E-rated tire I wouldn't think it would
"squish" much under the force exerted by the little winch?

Yes. It works. Yes air pressure changes diameter. Thanks for clearing up the difference between a party balloon and a tire though. I’ve been wondering about that...

Pretty timely thread for me. Even if I could cram my 295 under the truck it would hang way too low for me, so I just had a custom tire carrier built for the hatch. Uses 4 factory mount points with no cutting of plastic. I had a storage shelf added on with various attachment points for straps. Barely any lost visibility (can still see out side window backing up) and can eject the spare and lose virtually no space for sleeping inside at night. Having all the weight on the rear/right also has helped offset the lean.

Went from a 285 KO2 which I loved but wanted bigger, to a 295 Ridge Grappler which were the worst tires I ever owned, to a 285 Wildpeak AT3W which is a great tire but I want bigger again, so I ordered a new set of Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 tires today. Yeah this is all within 15,000 miles lol. Those will be installed next weekend. If I like them, I will order a 5th spare and I fully intend on putting it in the stock location but with a little extra something to catch it in the event the OEM hoist fails. Not sure how much I trust that thing with 90 pounds hanging from it going down the road.
