Does a 295-70-17 fit in the spare compartment?

Doe anyone know the spare tire storage area of the 4runner comparing to the GX460? I was told that 285/70-17 wont fit on the GX. I will be running 285/70-17 KO2's on the GX.

Went from a 285 KO2 which I loved but wanted bigger, to a 295 Ridge Grappler which were the worst tires I ever owned, to a 285 Wildpeak AT3W which is a great tire but I want bigger again, so I ordered a new set of Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 tires today. Yeah this is all within 15,000 miles lol. Those will be installed next weekend. If I like them, I will order a 5th spare and I fully intend on putting it in the stock location but with a little extra something to catch it in the event the OEM hoist fails. Not sure how much I trust that thing with 90 pounds hanging from it going down the road.

FWIW I just relocated my spare and was going to remove the OEM hoist (I discovered that is a huge PITA, so I'm leaving it). I would have no reservations about it holding the weight. It's pretty stout. Ground clearance would be my only (mild) concern.

I wish I still lived in MD; I would've taken those 285s off your hands!

Pretty timely thread for me. Even if I could cram my 295 under the truck it would hang way too low for me, so I just had a custom tire carrier built for the hatch. Uses 4 factory mount points with no cutting of plastic. I had a storage shelf added on with various attachment points for straps. Barely any lost visibility (can still see out side window backing up) and can eject the spare and lose virtually no space for sleeping inside at night. Having all the weight on the rear/right also has helped offset the lean.

13+ limited only, all other models do not have a sensor to the best of my knowledge. I know my 16 doesn't have a sensor.

There is no TPMS sensor on the spare of my 2018 TRD ORP. Thankfully!

Does that actually work? This is a heavy-duty radial tire we're talking about here, not a party balloon. It won't change size much if at all in response to pressure change. And with 15psi in an E-rated tire I wouldn't think it would
"squish" much under the force exerted by the little winch?

It should work if the tire does not fit by a little.

I can empathize with those tire changes.

However, I am not sure your ATZ P3 in 295 are any wider than your Wildpeaks in 285. The Wildpeaks run very wide, wider than any other tire in 265 or 255 by a lot so I would not be shocked if the same is true in 285.

My 265 are a full 9" wide at 34 psi. I think the stock was 8" measured at home.

I agree, the Ridge Grapplers were less than impressive, Nitto in general is lackluster in my eyes.

So ironic that this thread came back to light. I just sold my wilco tire carrier and I stored my 295 under the spare compartment and it fits like a glove. Although it fits, I am running 0 psi.

It's good to know a 285/75 fits under there as well, because I will be going 315's this year and I plan on getting 285/75 as a spare since the height of both tires are almost the same and I don't plan on getting a rear tire carrier/bumper anymore.

No smell. I had the tire in the garage for several weeks before this and it rode laying down in the hatch for a couple weeks before this too.

You two are the first I’ve ever heard saying anything bad about the Ridge Grappler! This was going to be my next tire (mostly because it’s an aggressive all terrain and also has C-rated 285/70 and 285/75 and it seems like all the rage now in lots of builds on IG...).

What didn’t you like about it?

I do wish there were more siping, I have KO2’s now and believe they’re most likely a better tire based on that (plus: BFG!)

Worst tire I have ever had in the rain. The KO2 is much better in rain, the Wildpeak AT3W is even better than the KO2
