Hello guys, newbie here...
Just curious to see if anyone here takes their 4Runners to the track.
I haven't taken mine, but I have taken my jeep, I guess I got hooked on running my jeep once in a while since I use to go with my buddies and their mustangs, but since I didn't have a mustang I decided to participate on one event once, called Street Wars, it consist of American cars vs. Imports, since that moment I got hooked into it. Last time I went to that event I almost made it to the semifinals, we had 10 Jeep Grand Cherokees participating that day, one made it to the semifinal. The event was based on bracket racing so it really doesn't matter what you run as long as you

I just ran the Truckfest up here outside of Denver and my 3rd gen is pretty slow (19.2@73mph) but I think it might have been a little quicker if I wouldn't have tried to powerbrake then launch.

It was fun to hang out at the strip but I doubt my truck will run the 1/4 mile til maybe next year.

I did run a '93 Eclipse GSX for 8 seasons and it was running over 6 seconds quicker (12.9@105@5800ft asl best) than the 4Runner so the truck was humbling and it felt slow.

I'd like to, I just haven't gotten around to it. Too busy:( That and I don't know if I can handle the embarassment of running high 16's (probably) up here in Denver...

I'll take it to the track eventually, then use the NHRA altitude corrections or something...

Yeah that high altitude it's pretty bad when it comes to track results. But hey..., its all about the fun, better than just sitting around and watching someone else run. I've been thinking to run my 2000 4Runner at the track on a test and tune day, see what it runs here at sea level.
BTW, those are excellent numbers for that GSX, you must have done a lot of stuff done to it.

Hey man I wouldn't be embarrased running that nice truck at the track, a bad day at the track beats a good day at work anyday, ofcourse if nothing breaks.
Hey you got some nice toys on your truck, I'm in the process to get a '06 Sport Edition V8 for my wife, and it seems like I found a nice forum to hang out and see what works and don't work on this trucks, so I'll probably be around this forum.
Ohh.. and yes... I'm still keeping the '00 4Runner.

for v8 folks, i'd imagine great take offs due to the 4wd, but we will probably run out of breath down the strip.

for a 6k lb truck, 16 is not too bad at all.

yes, i found the thread, here is the relevant stats for the 6 vs. the 8:

OK folks.. you asked for it.

I am copying and pasting my original post made over 6 months ago. To reply to those who want the numbers, these are no lies. I grew up in a racing family and this was the only way to settle it.

Alrighty everyone, the results are in.

Today Doanlaw (04 v8 AWD Sport Edition) and Myself (04 SR5 4x4 v6) took our rigs to Carlsbad Raceway to run some laps and see just how different these two engine setups run under controlled conditions. I think you'll be suprised, we sure were!

First off we made sure everything on each rig was as close as possible. We removed our Spare tires, took out our SUB Boxes, took anything else out that wasn't bolted down and both ran with under 3-4 gallons of gas in the tank. Note both of these rigs have the Revtek 3" lift kit installed as well.

We ran 3 passes, one with stock airfilter, one with the v8 running a K&N (just to see), and one with the drivers swapped.

I will type out all the details of our first (and fastest pass) and then give just 1/4 mile ET and MPH.

Pass 1: (our fastest)
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

2.349 ---- 60ft ---- 2.271
6.605 ---- 330ft ---- 6.499
10.140 ---- 1/8 mile ET ---- 10.051
70.03 ---- 1/8 MPH ---- 68.82
15.832 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.836
86.48 ---- 1/4 mph ---- 85.27

Pass 2: V8 with k&n, V6 Stock Air
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

15.863 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.978
86.11 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.17

Pass 3: Swapped Drivers
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

15.958 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.907
86.35 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.75

Well, there you have it. Talk amongst yourselves, speculate, etc (I know we have come up with every excuse in the book for why we were faster or not faster on certain parts of the track, hehe) - but the numbers don't lie, these two machines are EXTREMELY close.

Considering this is two different engines, two different transmissions and two different gear ratios, I'm simply amazed. We had a lot of fun and hope these numbers shed some light for both v6 and v8 drivers on what to expect from their rigs.

The best news in my mind is that our 4th gens rock! we run sub 16's STOCK and LIFTED!!! Woo hoo!!

Where are you getting 6k lbs from? Toyota's website lists the 4WD 4Runner at around 4500 lbs.

As for the post about the drag times, it makes sense these vehicles raced like they did. The non vvt-i V8 has less power but more torque which explains why it had a better 60ft/330ft in the first race, but as the V6's power took over in the high rpm ranges it caught up and passed the V8.

However, the VVT-i V8's come stock with 260 HP, which is at least 15 more than the V6. This V8 will get the V6 off the line and keep pulling through the quarter mile. Stock times for the VVT-i V8 are in the low to mid 15's.

My rig has intake/exhaust and I'm going to dyno tune the A/F ratio. I put down 212 AWHP with just exhaust and K&N drop-in. With the Volant intake and the Split Sec A/F tuner, I expect to get to 225 AWHP which translates into 280+ crank HP or a full 35 more than a stock V6. I would expect quarter mile times in the low 15's, maybe even 15 flat. Any V6's wanna race now? :biggrin2:

He's looking at the gross vehicle weight which is the max weight including full payload and passengers. The CURB weight is a bit under 4500lbs on a 4th gen and under 4100 on 3rd gens.

If I may ask... Where are you located? Just curious to know if that's at sea level?
Nice comparison... cant believe how close they are in performance.
Those are pretty good numbers on the V6, congrats...

BTW, check out my new sig I just updated it, shows my ET on the jeep plus a video at the track.
Later

Before they leveled the Carlsbad Speedway for industrial space, it was located maybe 25 feet above sea level, North San Diego County.
