Does anyone actually use DAC?

When it is REALLY STEEP and the terrain is REALLY LOOSE and you are likely to have all four wheels sliding (no way to stop, slow or steer) DAC is the only way to go....

Basically, Dac is tapping the brake on each wheel independently so that you don't induce sliding by stopping all four on the loose stuff.

It is rarely needed but if you're in the situation where you are in a four wheel slide it's already too late to engage it.

Especially handy when you have tried climbing a very steep loose hill and cannot make it - engage the DAC to back down. That's when it really shines.

Exactly what he said.

I used it once. Gravel hill deep in BLM lands that was too steep to avoid slippage.

I use it all the time, I think it is great on rocks and gravel, but I always have my foot ready to hit the brakes if something goes wrong.

Ah - ha.... i was waiting for someone to admit this. It happened to me in the ice storms we had a few years ago.

We had a steep hill iced over in the hood and no one would go up or down it... so i said. f-it and put it in 4-low, turned on the DAC and viola ended up in the neighbors yard spinning out of control. Scared me to death. Had zero control of the vehicle.

SO... i drove up the icy hill in 4 low and turned around and went down in 4-Hi and put the shifter in Drive and just rolled down the hill.. no problems...

(DAC probably not intended for ice, but i wanted to try it)

Haha.. When it happened to me, I believe it grabbed the right front tire and spun me around. It has its uses like everything else.

I'd like this too...

I don't use DAC much because it's so loud, but IIRC the gear shift acts like a speed selector with DAC - if you have DAC on in 1st gear it will go slower than if you have it in third. I don't think the OP mentioned one way or the other where the gear shift was in DAC. It has been a while but I do believe I have had DAC take me down a hill slower than 4Lo+1st w/o braking.

OP here- I had the truck in 1st gear when I used DAC.

For clarification purposes, here's an excerpt from the owner's manual:

TO ACTIVATE THE DOWNHILL ASSIST
CONTROL SYSTEM
1. Full- time four- wheel drive models—
Turn the four- wheel drive control
switch knob to the “L4” position.
The system will not operate if the fourwheel
drive control switch knob is in the
“H4” position.
Multi- mode four- wheel drive models—
Turn the multi- mode control
switch knob to the “L4” position.
The system will not operate if the multimode
control switch knob is in the “H4”
position.
2. In order to make full use of the engine
brake, putting the transmission
in “L” or “2” is recommended.
5- speed automatic transmission—The system
will operate even if the transmission
selector lever is in “D”, “4”, “3” or “N”.
However, when it is in “L” or “2” the engine
brake can also be utilized enabling
the system to operate more effectively.

Based on what I see I don't think the software cares what gear you're in.

It seems as if DAC is basically an electronic speed limiter that uses the brakes, using the built-in ABS capability to prevent a 4-wheel slide from occuring...at least some of the time, apparently not in ice/snow.

The speed DAC allows was too fast for the rocky terrain shown in the picture I posted earlier in the thread.

I've used it a bunch. Works great going down steep mud/wet clay hills. It really does a nice job of keeping you straight but sometimes I have found that it doesn't slow you down enough.

I have used DAC. I've just never used it where I thought I needed it in retrospect, but in certain situations it's been kind of nice to have but I'd call it mostly a luxury.

My first extensive use was on Red Cone in Colorado. I was new to 4-wheeling and following the books which way oversell the danger. About halfway down, I turned it off to see the difference. It would be good for someone who maybe shouldn't be on that hill in the first place, but for anyone who is not going to panic, it was more of a luxury. It scrubbed off a little speed on the steepest spots -- maybe as much as 2mph momentarily (1st gear of course). It could be said that it relieves the burden of brake management so the driver can just steer, but the 3-4 mph speed means that if you're successfully using it at that speed, you're probably not on a surface difficult enough for that to matter. Officially, the speed target is 2-4mph but it can't hold 2mph on anything reasonably steep.

And I don't see any reason to use it in anything other than 1st gear.

I take it you never got the memo brakes and ice are a bad relationship in drivers ed 101

LOL... i am from Alabama.... nuff said.... hahaha..

but truthfully i just wanted to try it and see what happened. now i know.

Plus i bought chains later that week (after the ice storm) just so it will never ice here in Alabama ever again...

Lmfao yup you didn't get that memo in that state hahaha

Dam I forgot they replace driving in bad weather with how to lift a pickup or suv down in that part of the country

Funny how reading the owners manual can actually answer some questions or give advice, right? :bounce:

I don’t know why I feel the need to bump this theead but I thought I’d add that I love DAC. It’s loud and annoying but man it is perfect for descending loose or rocky or rutty shit where you don’t want to brake. I hate brakes anywhere, not just off-road. Like driving a fast car on a windy road, I’d rather rely on engine (and in this case gearing and ABS pulses) braking than my actual brake pedal any day. I’ve had some real fun with it engaged.

My main problem with DAC is it isn't slow enough. I've tried using it going down steep hills off-road where I'd rather be worrying about wheel placement than managing gearing, but it's just a little too fast.

Main thing I use it for is to demonstrate what ATRAC will feel like.

I've never used it myself, threw away the switch a long time ago. Not entirely sure how it works but I would rather have my foot on the brake when going down the steep stuff when offroading, I just don't trust it more than my foot.

I've met a guy that totaled his Xterra relying on Nissan's version of that braking system, he claimed it blew a brake line with it's fast pulsing and sent him down a washout. Maybe it would have blown without the DAC system on but we'll never know.
