Does anyone else get their truck underestimated?

The thing about 100+mph on public roads is that no one else is expecting it so they make decisions based on the speed limit... how far away another vehicle is, how much time they have, etc. I've seen the results, too many times, of excessive speed on the streets. At least on a track speed is assumed and you're typically with like-minded individuals.
 
I am a previous 4 door Wrangler owner and even stock that vehicle went places that the modded ones had issues with.

I don't have plans on using the 4 Runner in nearly as tough of conditions as I did the JKU, but I feel that with a few mods (stiffer springs, rock rails and a bit of a lift) that the 4 Runner would probably hold it's own.

I can honestly say that I am concerned about the IFS set up and the strength of those components but only because I have no experience with them. I look forward to putting the 4 runner through a bit more just to see how it handles it.

I consider my truck a utility vehicle so I definitely don't tout it as a crazy off roading vehicle, but I know what it's capable of. My buddy with a beat ass 92 tahoe always tries to say his truck is better than mine, and say that his truck has "real 4wd" and that my truck doesn't. I just laugh to myself and roll my eyes. My V6 4Runner also has like 65-70 more hp than his old ass truck, and according to him, I'm wrong when comparing the stock HP values. Of course, he also says that my 4RUNNER doesn't have real 4wd because it's electronically controlled :rofl:

haha whoever says this needs to read a little on cars. are you serious? a Tahoe? it's funny because the 4Runner is a 4wd icon and is known for it's truck-based platform, real 4x4 ability, etc. if you ask me, sounds like someone is a little jealous :hatsoff:
 
I underestimated my runner just today. I'm working in Ohio but from New Jersey, so I didn't know about these so called roads that have no maintenance. There was a sign saying not maintained, and to travel at your own risk. I took the route, mainly because my runner told me to on the nav. The road quickly became a very small trail with what looked like a creek running down it. I thought I was going to just flip over, slide down the cliff, or otherwise just get stuck. I drove slow and carefully and made it through. BTW my runner is mostly stock with a 1" front lift and BFG AT KO's. Thats it.

Another time I was stopped at a light when a mid 2000s F150 stopped next to me. The light turned green and he started racing. I saw his dual exhaust, then quickly saw his headlights in the rear view. As i passed him he had a look on his face as to say, "What the Hell? That's not supposed to happen!"

lol I'm in Jersey if I see any signs that say that I might purposefully take those roads just for some fun lol...similar to finding some excuse just to go out driving in the middle of a blizzard
 
I could care less what other people think about my truck...it's abilities...or mine. You'll be much happier if you didn't worry about what other people thought.
 
I seemingly encounter this every time I've walked into the 4 Wheel Parts store looking for specific components. The store is down the street from where I work.

At first I thought it was just me (middle-aged old fart who doesn't have the appearance of a hip off-roader). A 30-something co-worker who off-roads with his FJ Cruiser mentioned that he stopped going there because of their anti-Toyota mentality. This affirmed my experiences.
 
I have both a Jeep and a 4Runner. My Jeep is not stock so it really isn't a fair comparison. Stock the jeep has a suspension that will move better, stock the 4Runner has a traction control system that will work much better. I could easily see a stock 4Runner dominating a stock wrangler when it is slick. I can easily see a stock Wrangler beating a stock Runner on the rocks. The Jeep Rubicon has a traction control system that is better yet, there are not many stock vehicles that will compare here.

Unless you do a Solid axle conversion they 4Runner never have the travel a Jeep (with solid axel). High Speed the IFS could be better, low speed crawling the solid axle will be better.

Now if you compare the older Toyotas with the solid front axle all bets are off. At that point is just how you build them and the type of wheeling you do.

As far as the newer Jeeps with IFS I would choose the 4Runner.

If you are looking to modify and build it up the Wrangler is a much better option.

For me the biggest issue with the 4Runner is there is just too much glass and metal.

i have been involved with a different forum where all questions for jeep vehicles are posted and most of their answers about jeeps and trucks being underestimated, well just like mine, were not at all. well, a little, but not really. just show 'em your truck's performance is great. my jeep is doing good so no one dares to underestimate it. lol.:biggrin2:
 
Its not the rig, its the Driver..................

Ive been asked to many times. "Are you taking that, on this trail" my general reply is, If you get out of my way. lol
 
Me me me! I was getting on the expressway with this BMW tailgating me.... So I was doing 55 on the in ramp... Get to the interstate and we both floor it. He was on my quarter panel and not letting up and neither was I. Lets just say he couldn't keep up and all I could self were his headlights. (It was a newer BMW, maybe a 2006 or so. Not sure of the model, it was Nighttime.

this thread has been very entertaining, very capable off road for what it is. but i've said it before and i will say it again, lots of people have a good imagination or low expectations of speed if they think these puppies are fast.

Coming from a 98 V6 and a 03 Highlander 4 cylinder its fast. Not all of us can own a Audi.
